In the past few month I often get some strange characters in messages.
My default view is HTML, but it happens in other views as well.
No problem when viewing them in the browser.

Win 7, IE 8 installed.

No problem with a different account.
But then, with my regular account the behavior isn't consistent.

The only thing I changed recently (apart from upgrading PP to v2003) is replacing Avast AV with Panda AV.
No idea if this is relevant at all.
