Hotmail/Outlook IMAP errors (tl;dr edition)

Post by Jeff »

The problem
- Starting around March 26, Outlook's IMAP server started having severe connection issues. The problem continues today, 5 weeks later. This is a server-side (outlook.com) issue and all IMAP clients are affected.
- Outlook's POP3 server has some issues, but not on the magnitude of IMAP
- Web access and protocols that use similar access (ie. EWS and POP Peeper's own webmail protocol) do not seem to be affected. There are some reports of issues across the internet, but it's unclear if these are related.

Solutions

1) NEW -- Edit your account(s) and change the following servers:
IMAP: outlook.office365.com
SMTP: smtp.office365.com (continue to use smtp-mail.outlook.com -- smtp.office365.com does not support oauth2)

Enabling IDLE/Push is recommended.

2) Use POP3: Edit the account and change the "server type" to "POP3". You will likely need to enable POP3 in your outlook.com account(s) as it is not enabled by default. See the Hotmail/Outlook POP3 FAQ for more information.

3) Use WebMail: Edit the account and change the "server type" to "Hotmail/Outlook". For sending mail, you will need to use SMTP; click the "Send Mail" page and change the "send option" to SMTP. If the other values aren't filled in, refer to the Hotmail/Outlook POP3 FAQ and refer to the SMTP settings. Note: POP Peeper v4.4 will default to SMTP by default for WebMail.

4) POP Peeper v4.4 improves error handling and is currently available for beta testing. However, one of the above options is still recommended with v4.4.
