Mail.com : Error (Send) message

Post by eyecandy »

Hi,

I've encountered many issues lately with my mail.com accounts and I'm bringing this to you now since I can't seem to find a workaround of any kind. I'm up-to-date plugins-wise (PP/IMAP/SendMail/Profile Picture: 4.3.0.0 / Webmail: 4.3.1.0, SSL: 1.0.2.10).
I've checked on the site and followed the below instructions and tried many SSL/TLs combos, to no avail:

Incoming Mail Settings:
Login Name: Full email address
Server Type: IMAP
Server: imap.mail.com
TLS/SSL is optional
Port: 143 (if using SSL: 993)
Idle: optional
Send Mail Settings:
Reply Option: SMTP
Server: smtp.mail.com
SSL is optional
Port: 25 or 587 (if using SSL: 465)
Server Requires Authentication: Enabled
Note: In some cases, you may need to use the GMX server (such as in cases of the server responding with, "hack attempt, login temporarily disabled for this ip"):
Note2: The gmx.com servers may only be available for premium subscribers of the email service:
IMAP: imap.gmx.com
POP3: pop.gmx.com

Prior to this particular issue I often had a long error message saying "too many connections: BYE". It would randomly go away after shutting down PP a few times or just by itself - not sure, but it's annoying.

I hope PopPeeper is still able to retrieve Mail.com's messages cos they're my main inboxes...!

Thank you for your help

Welcome to the forum eyecandy,

The following consistently works for me on four different mail.com accounts:
Server type: IMAP
Incoming Server: imap.mail.com
Port: 993 using SSL/TLS or 143 using STARTTLS (I have two accounts using the former and two accounts using the latter and all work without errors)

Send Option: SMTP
SMTP Sever: smtp.mail.com
Port: 465 using SSL/TLS or 587 using STARTTLS (I have two accounts using the former and two accounts using the latter and all work without errors)
Server Requires authentication: enabled (checked)

In "Tools" > "Options", "Mail Check" tab -- what is your Polling Interval Minutes set at? (it is generally recommended to be "10" or above)

Would you please post the errors you get? (click on yellow exclamation in lower-right corner of POP Peeper main window and press the "Copy" button in the Error Overview window and then Paste (right-click, select "Paste") into this topic. This may give us additional information to help analyze your problem.

Thank you very much lakrsrool,

The main issue I experienced this morning has sorted itself out apparently but I was greeted with a "Server unexpectedly disconnected (Server said BYE: too many open connections)" on one of my two MAIL.COM accounts just about now. This particular issue is both persistent and inconsistent = a pain. But it's gone too now, until next time.

I am checking if the polling interval could be the issue, I normally set it to 1. I also have the webmail opened in my browser while PP works in the background, I know it's a bit overkill but I keep receiving so many emails that I need, for various reasons, both ways of handling messages.
~am I overkilling Mail's servers by any chance? :p ~

Cheers!

To answer your question, YES absolutely!! (as far as account log-in frequency as opposed to Server usage) - if I understand you correctly you are checking mail every minute (see screen-shot below). If you have the Polling Interval (pointed out below) set to "1" this would clearly create a problem since this would be logging into you accounts far to frequently. Some Email Clients would actually shut down the account (i.e. Yahoo and others) temporarily if this were done, so I'm not surprised that you would be having problems.

We have had issues in the past with some Email Clients having problems with even the Mail Check interval value set to less than 15 minutes.

I have mine set to "12" (as you can see in the screen-shot).

Also, since you are using IMAP, it would definitely be better to use "IDLE" by enabling (check) "IDLE/Push" in the Account Edit interface (General tab). This way your accounts will not be doing a log-in as much since IDLE remains logged-in for longer periods of time and doesn't have to log-in all the time behind the scenes. But more importantly than that since Mail.com supports "IDLE", you will get your messages as soon they arrive on your account(s) Servers. With this in mind it is not necessary for these accounts to be doing interval Mail Checks that often because with IMAP account that use IDLE you receive messages right away regardless of the Mail Check settings.

We generally recommend setting all IMAP accounts to use IDLE and set Mail Check Interval to 10 minutes or more.
I have mine set to 12 minute intervals.
I have mine set to 12 minute intervals.
Btw, eyecandy - you can test this yourself, change the Mail Check Interval to say 10 or 15 and while the Mail Check is waiting until the next Mail Check (look at Mail Check status in status bar of main PP interface or if you have the "Minutes until next mail check" option enabled just hover over the system tray icon to get this info) and send a message to these accounts with "IDLE" enabled to test what I have described above, you will see that the messages will arrive in the POP Peeper inbox for these accounts within a few seconds of sending the messages and that a Mail Check was not necessary for PP to retrieve them. Pretty neat, huh? (so you can see your concern about getting messages quickly is addressed by using "IDLE" for IMAP accounts in this case and it is not necessary for the Polling Interval to be such a low number that would cause such frequent scheduled Mail Checks, all of which should help resolve your issues with Mail.com accounts and at the same time more pragmatically serve your intentions of having one minute polling intervals to retrieve messages in a timely manner.)

I can't say how much I appreciate the way you've dealt with my enquiry: this is truly state-of-the-art and not soon to be forgotten. THANK YOU.
I'm not a webmail specialist and even if I "understand" the subject generally speaking, its intricacies are beyond me. Now I'm starting to get it.
I've set the polling interval to 12 and all of my accounts have the IDLE option enabled. I've tested those settings by sending a couple emails from two different accounts to my mail.com inboxes and indeed it works!
I'm lucky I didn't get banned and I'm really grateful for your advice.
Cheers!
