"Parameter is incorrect." immediately after creation of account, + more.

Post by Sasha »

Hello,

When I try sending mail through one of my accounts, I get the following error:

Login error: Auth Login

The Server Response is: 200.

Furthermore, if I edit the account to try to change some settings, when I click the "Save" button, I get the error:

PopPeeper
The parameter is incorrect.

None of the changes save. This same error appeared immediately after I created this account.

If I create an account with the exact same credentials in PopPeeper v3.8.1 (which I keep around because it has slightly different functionality, which is often helpful when troubleshooting), then instead of all of the above errors, I get the following error when sending:

Error verifying 'To'

In this case, the message that the server returned is different:

Server Returned: 5.7.1 <test@vcn.bc.ca>: Relay access denied (#554)

The exact message is pasted below. What else can I do to troubleshoot this? I cannot find any way to obtain anything more detailed...

--- Version ---
OS: 6.2
POP Peeper: 3.8.1.0
Webmail: 3.8.0.4
SSL: 0.9.8.10
IMAP: 3.8.1.0
SendMail: 3.8.1.0

--- Error ---
VCN [0: POP3] ['mail.vcn.bc.ca' (port: 110)] [SSL: 2]
Send Mail: Error verifying 'To'<br> Server Returned: 5.7.1 &lt;test@vcn.bc.ca&gt;: Relay access denied (#554)

Your Incoming Server Settings look good to me (based on VCN's Email Configuration Guidelines).

Are you using this configuration for your Outgoing Server settings (SMTP):
Server hostname: out.vcn.bc.ca
Port: 587
SSL: STARTTLS

What Email Service are you using (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook etc.)?

Have similar accounts previously worked in PP? (If so when did this issue start?)

Other members of the Esumsoft Team may have more to contribute as well. 8-[

I am not sure what you mean by "what e-mail service" I am using.

No, I never tried accessing this account with PopPeeper before.

I cannot change the above account because of the "Parameter incorrect" error. I created a new account with your settings, and now I am getting a different error:

The login settings are correct, because I can fetch mail with them.

In your v3.8.1 error output, I noticed that it suggested you were using test@ as the sender. Is it possible that you're trying to send email from an email address that you don't have access to?

Otherwise:
1) Edit the account in POP Peeper
2) Select the "Send Mail" page
3) Make sure that "Server requires authentication" is enabled (if it was disabled, stop here and test if it works)
4) Press the settings button next to the above option
5) "Use same login as incoming" is usually recommended, if you already have that, change it to "use these settings" and enter your login/password.
-> Note that sometimes the login requires the @domain.com and sometimes it doesn't -- if one doesn't work, try the other

I've already tried all of this before posting, including both with and without the @domain.

The "test@" is the recipient, not the sender.

I would suggest contacting your ISP then. Both "relay access denied" and a login error (if you're sure it's set correctly) indicate that you don't have permission to do what you're doing. The former generally means that you weren't using authentication, and perhaps they eventually suspended your IP address so that now you can't login -- that's just a possibility, only your ISP will be able to explain what's going on.

btw, according to vcn's official docs (as posted by lakrsrool), your login name should *not* include @vcn.bc.ca.

Thank you for your support. To my surprise, contacting the ISP did solve the problem, and now I can send mail successfully.

That's not the same error. However, what you need to do is enable OAuth2 because Yahoo requires that now; which is only available for IMAP (which is superior anyway):
1) Edit each account in POP Peeper
2) Change the "server type" to IMAP
3) Next to your login name, press the Oauth2 button and follow the instructions to grant POP Peeper access to your email
Note that for Oauth2, it's recommended that you press the "alternate (web browser)" button on the bottom-left immediately after you press the "Oauth2" button
