Pop Peeper keeps losing track of email accounts

Post by rvail317 »

Hello,
There seems to be a new issue of Pop Peeper losing track of email accounts upon shut down or system re-boot.
The account will simply disappear.
Could be related to picking the alternate location of
C:/Program Files (x86)/POP Peeper/
as the data storage location?
The installation of Windows became unstable, so had to do a completely fresh re-format & re-install of the O.S.: Windows 20H2, build 19042.685.
PopPeeper had no such issue before the Windows re-install. It was also running the same (latest) version of Pop Peeper, although had been initially installed as version 4.0 & subsequently upgraded to version 5.0.
Please double-check & see if there may be an issue with disappearing email accounts, when PP has been "freshly installed".
Thanks.

POP Peeper cannot write to the "Program Files" folder, so anything that you change (including new accounts, settings, etc.) cannot be saved.

There are actually 2 possibly different files/folders, both located under:
main menu: Tools / Options / Storage

If just the poppeeper.ini file is located in "Program Files" then that will just affect accounts/settings.
If the data path is also under "Program Files" then that will affect everything else -- messages, address book, etc.

Basically, you'll need to move files so that POP Peeper can have write-access again. Here's a FAQ that provides more information:
https://www.esumsoft.com/products/pop-p ... q=DataPath

Before you do that --
If you restored from an old backup, it's possible that it picked up an old copy of poppeeper.ini file that was in your "Program Files" folder. If you look in your user folder, e.g.
%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\POP Peeper\
And you see a poppeeper.ini file in there with a recent timestamp, then try this method instead:
1) Exit POP Peeper
2) Rename the following file so that POP Peeper doesn't see it:
C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\poppeeper.ini
rename it to something like "poppeeper-old.ini"
3) Restart POP Peeper
4) Go back to main menu: Tools / Options / Storage and confirm that the 2 locations (the ini file and data path) both point to folders under C:\Users\...\ and -- if so -- you should be good.

OK, thanks. However, it seems a bit illogical to be offered the choice of the data location in the initial setup, only to later be confronted with disappearing email accounts. Instead of offering C:/Program Files (x86)/ as a data location, maybe consider changing it to it's own dedicated folder: C:/POP Peeper (and therefore writable). And so: a simple copy of that folder could more easily be saved and used for data backup purposes.

It's the Data and "ini" (configuration) files that should not in general be located at the "C:\Program Files (x86)" file path due to Windows UAC (which is not the default PP install for these files) - that by default are installed at the locations as illustrated in the "Storage" window screen-shot below. The default location for the program files (executables) can be and are by default installed at the "C:\Program Files (x86)" location however.

In general, I personally install software virtually all the time where it installs by default myself. The option to not install at the default locations is available to users (which is what you apparently did rvail317 :-k) - but doing so can cause consequences that sometimes may need to be addressed.

Example:
Where the Configuration (&quot;ini&quot;) and Data files are typically located (installed by default).<br />Note: You can enlarge image for improved viewing (use browser back-arrow to return to forum topic)

If the idea is have an easily accessed and copied full backup of an email app (including the main program .exe file + data), then being able to create a dedicated "C:/POP Peeper" folder for that purpose seems to me to be the best alternative, compared to the current options. The issue I've described of disappearing email accounts upon system re-boot would tend to make a random first-time user ditch POP Peeper & try Mozilla Thunderbird or some other alternative app.

Actually the Thunderbird Email app (for that matter virtually any app in general) installs by default in essentially the same manner as POP Peeper installs by default (including in general, the default locations where these various type files typically install).

When you select the portable option and the folder is not writable, you get a popup that recommends that you not use this option and tells you that it won't be able to save accounts and other data.

As of v5.1, the option in this scenario will be disabled, so you won't be able to do it.

As for installing POP Peeper where you want -- this already exists. There's a zip archive available on the download page which most people use when they want to use custom installs; but the executable installer also supports installing POP Peeper where you want, you just need to select the custom install option.
