XP, PP & Yahoo! (Fixed)

Post by Bruce »

Is POP Peeper no longer compatible with Yahoo on a Windows XP and Firefox platform?

I originally had the passwords for my 2 Yahoo accounts stored in PP. A few weeks ago, PP and my Yahoo accounts stopped authenticating. However, I can still successfully log into both Yahoo accounts via Firefox.

--- Version ---
OS: Windows XP
POP Peeper: 5.1.2.0
Webmail: 5.1.0.0
SSL: 1.1.1.7
IMAP: 5.1.2.0
SendMail: 5.1.2.0
Profile Picture: 4.1.1.0 (disabled)
AntiJunk: 4.1.1.0 (disabled)
Spell Checker: 4.1.1.0 (disabled)
Web of Trust: 4.1.1.0 (disabled)
PPTweaker: 5.1.2.0
Updater: 1.0.0.0

Browser: Firefox: 52.9.0

--- Error ---
Yahoo [1000: IMAP] ['imap.mail.yahoo.com' (993) SSL: 1] [Smtp: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com' (465) SSL: 1] [oauth: 0] [consec: 7]
- Login Error ([AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] LOGIN Invalid credentials)
- Edit account: pp://EditAccount?gibberish
- Tip: Edit the account and enable OAuth2, or use the following link:
- Set Oauth2: pp://OAuth2?gibberish

I have not added software or changed any setting on this computer either before or after these errors started. PP just began to err.

To troubleshoot, I deleted the accounts and after a few reboots, reentered the accounts with the same unsuccessful results.

I deleted the accounts again in PP and attempted to reenter with the OAuth2 standard.

Every step appears to work okay until I try to open the link in Firefox:
(1) Dialog Box: Launch Application: This link needs to open with an application. Send to:
(2) I choose POP Peeper Email Notifier
(3) I click the Open Link button
(4) Dialog Box: OAuth was NOT successful. You may need to try an alternate method.

I tried the 2 other methods with the same unsuccessful results.

After each attempt via OAuth2, Yahoo does send an email confirming PP successfully signed into my accounts: "Your Yahoo account was just used to sign in on POP Peeper."

It just seems like PP doesn't like the link for OAuth2 from my old version of Firefox.

Eager to troubleshoot with you...thanks!

POP Peeper needs to make https calls to Yahoo, and Yahoo (and most other websites) no longer support the encryption methods provided by XP.

You can still use POP Peeper to login, though, you just won't be able to use Oauth2. You need to use an app password:

Worked like a charm! POP Peeper actually checks email faster, although "less securely."

For my fellow XP troglodytes...

To start anew, I deleted both Yahoo accounts in POP Peeper
I added the first account in POP Peeper and at the Enter Password step, stopped

1. Log into Yahoo email account via Firefox
2. In Yahoo email account, click profile image
3. Select link: Account Info
4. In left pane of Personal Info page, click Account Security
5. Under Account Access, locate App Password
6. Click link: Generate app password
7. In popup window, click link: Get Started
8. Enter Your App's Name: POP Peeper
9. Click link: Generate Password
10. Copy password with mouse or click Copy link
11. Click link: Done
12. Return to POP Peeper, paste generated app-password (Ctrl V)
13. Finish adding account in POP Peeper

In Firefox, log out of the first Yahoo account
In Firefox, log into second account
Repeat procedures beginning at Step-3

Thanks Jeff!

Thanks Bruce for those detailed steps you have posted regarding the process to create a Yahoo app password. Image

There is also a topic in the forum on this procedure with screen-shots for additional help for anyone interested: Yahoo mail changes. (scroll down from where the post is linked for two optional methods [specific to the Yahoo version] to generate Yahoo app passwords)
