Gmail is starting a new service for users who wants to pay for more storage space:

Yahoo.com changed everyone to unlimited storage back in May 2007.

AOL now also offers unlimited storage. AOL is offering POP as well as IMAP access.

Microsoft is developing a Desktop email client, called Window Live Mail, to access the Hotmail account for free. The program is in Beta for Vista users

It's not only for Vista users, war1. I'm using it for almost a year now with WinXP without any problem, if I want to manage other folders then the Inbox with PP (< that is a hint, Jeff )

Alf, thanks for the clarification. I did not know Windows Live Mail beta works in Windows XP. That is good to know.

I figured gmail would eventually charge for *something* but a premium storage fee was not what I was expecting. I can't think of too many legitimate reasons someone would need 250gb of email storage, but to each his own.

So do you think yahoo and aol knew gmail was headed in this direction and decided to beat them to the punch?

I had assumed the same thing. That is good to know...

I think the reason for the confusion is that "Windows Mail" is only for Vista. From the wiki: "(Windows Live Mail) is intended to be a replacement for Outlook Express on Windows XP and Windows Mail on Windows Vista."

So Windows Mail is already obsolete and Windows Live Mail, not to be confused with Windows Live Hotmail, is the successor. I think the next time someone mentions PP needs a name change I'll point to this fiasco as exhibit A.
