Outgoing gmail issue

I'm having a problem with my gmail on the iPhone . The error I'm getting is when I open my email a popup thing comes up and says that connection to outgoing mail server SMTP.gmail.com has failed. Does anyone know how to fix this. Because I cannot send email and its getting pretty frustrating. I apologize If this is an easy fix im just not sure how to do it and its driving me nuts.

I don't have an iPhone, but there is a specific faq from gmail regarding the iPhone setup:

although it doesn't seem to suggest anything unexpected.

Is your outgoing server settings port 465 or 587? SSL enabled? Outgoing server authentication enabled?

Also, change SMTP.gmail.com to smtp.gmai.com Case should not make a difference, but it's worth a try.
