All Accounts: Unknown Host

Post by vonitsa »

Three Hotmail accounts all set as IMAP and another one set as POP3 give me an "Unknown Host" error this morning.
All plugins are current.
Can someone help?

Are you able to successfully log-in to these Hotmail accounts on the internet using your web browser?

What version of Pop Peeper are you using?

Hotmail's IMAP servers have very frequent but usually very temporary issues. If you're still having the problem, the problem is likely on your end. "unknown host" means that the server could not be discovered (e.g. imap-mail.outlook.com) and there could be a problem with your DNS. Open a DOS prompt and type:
ping imap-mail.outlook.com
press <enter> and you should get valid results:
C:\>ping imap-mail.outlook.com
Pinging imap.glbdns2.microsoft.com [207.46.11.202] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
"Request timed out" is acceptable (not all servers respond to ping requests), it's the first response line that's important; that is, it resolved to an IP address.

If ping works, but PP still does not, try exiting/restarting POP Peeper; and your computer if that doesn't work.

If PP still does not work after doing what Jeff suggested above the problem may be due to corrupted local DNS cache (note: rebooting will likely resolve issues). Sometimes bad results are cached, maybe due to DNS Cache Poisoning and Spoofing, and therefore needs to be cleared from the cache in order to allow your Windows computer to communicate with the host correctly. Please post any questions you may have before proceeding.

Outlined below are the steps to follow in order to flush your DNS cache in Windows OS for Win XP, Vista, Win 7, Win 8, keep in mind this needs to be done from an elevated command prompt (run the Command Prompt as administrator). Proceed only if you have appropriate computer knowledge.

Here is how to fix possibly corrupted DNS cache.
1. Click the Microsoft Start logo in the bottom left corner of the screen (Windows 8 Press Win key [Windows logo key] + X > click Command Prompt [Admin] skip to step 6)
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. RIGHT-Click on Command Prompt
5. Select "Run As Administrator"
6. In the command window type the following and then press enter: ipconfig /flushdns
7. You will essentially see the following confirmation: "Windows IP Configuration Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache."

Thank you for your response.
Problem fixed.
As you said, the problem was on my end.
One last question though: IS it better to have Hotmail accounts configured as IMAP or as Hotmail/Outlook?

While Jeff may want to elaborate on this, here is what he had to say a few months back more specifically involving Hotmail (since you're question is in regards to Hotmail): Re: Any benefit to using webmail over imap?

Addendum: Btw, this topic question is also discussed more recently by Jeff HERE with a followup HERE as well (that can both be found on the 1st page of the forum ).

Hope this helps. :D

My advice: try imap and if it's too much of a bother, try webmail. Enabling IDLE for IMAP (edit the account, you'll see idle on the bottom-right) should help lower the number of reported errors. In this case, it seems Hotmail disconnects the idle connection in under 3 minutes (fyi: the official IMAP rfc states a minimum of 30 minutes), and this will cause PP to immediately re-connect.
