Dates in Yahoo

Post by DAN »

I have 2 yahoo mail accounts checked by PP. About 3 days ago, on those accounts the dates became inverted: PP started swapping the day and the month, which of course messes up the display by date.

The date is no longer displayed in the right format. On my machines this is European style dd.mm.yyyy (21.06.2016) and this format is well applied by PP to the other types of accounts. It used to do it for the Yahoo accounts too, but now it displays another format "Tue, 6/21/16".

the bug appeared both on PP 4.0.1 and 4.2.0 versions.
Is this something that I can correct myself, or is it something caused by yahoo that Jeff must adapt PP to ?

Hi DAN and welcome back! :)

Sorry to hear of the date problem you're reporting. In the interim, until Jeff and other members of the PP Team
can stop by to further review the issue, please post back with the following info:

1. Which operating system(s) are you using?

2. Which protocol are you using to access the affected accounts in PP? (e.g. Yahoo (Webmail), POP3, IMAP, etc)

[To check: On the PP main interface, right-click the account(s) in the Account List > [EDIT] > {GENERAL] tab > Server type]

3. When you log-in to those accounts on-line, are email messages there, being shown with the European date format?

Thank you and best regards.

Hello spc3rd,

1. Which operating system(s) are you using?
XP SP3 for the PP 4.0.1 and win 7 Pro SP1 for the 4.2.0

2. Which protocol are you using to access the affected accounts in PP?
Yahoo

3. When you log-in to those accounts on-line, are email messages there, being shown with the European date format?
As usual, it displays other formats:
on one account MMM dd (Jun 24) if old mail, the time (2:04 PM) if today's mail.
on the other ddd m/d/yy (Fri, 6/17/16) if old mail, the time (2:04 PM) if today's mail.

just to emphasize, this was not changed. PP used to work correctly with those settings on both accounts until a few days ago.

For all other accounts, and for Yahoo until recently, dates display like this:
PPdates other accounts.png
PPdates other accounts.png (5.1 KiB) Viewed 6817 times
Now for yahoo, they display like this. Which is not even consistent within the same account. Three different formats appear:
PP dates yahoo.png
PP dates yahoo.png (4.79 KiB) Viewed 6817 times
Thanks for the care

Thanks very much for providing the info and screenshots, DAN, and you're welcome!

I have contacted Jeff and asked him to review your issue, as I'm sort of out of ideas as to what is causing the problem.

He should be stopping by later. Sorry I couldn't be of more help on this one.

Best regards,

ok, I did find something that was preventing the correct timestamp; but, so that I can double-check that it will work for you, can you tell me:
1) Are your accounts using the "basic" interface or the "newest" interface (ie. "basic" will show a link to "switch to the newest yahoo mail" near the top-right)

2) What location/language is your Yahoo account(s) set to?
--> ummm... presumably, this would be under Account info / Preferences / Locations and Languages, but I'm getting an "unknown host" error... although it works in another browser (maybe because my first browser is in "private browsing"...?). Well, hopefully you'll have better luck with it.

Hi Jeff,

1) Are your accounts using the "basic" interface or the "newest" interface
I have tried both to see if it changed anything. It didn't. Right now both accounts are on newest.

2) What location/language is your Yahoo account(s) set to?
--> ummm... presumably, this would be under Account info / Preferences / Locations and Languages
Locations: I get several locations in South Florida listed, for both accounts.
Now I suspect I know what you are after: If I remember right, originally (ie maybe 15 years ago, or possibly more) my first account was set as Yahoo USA with an address in Fla. The other, later, as Yahoo New Zealand. I had to do that in order to get around some silly restriction, like enabling POP access on a free account was possible only on non-US accounts at some point. (Marketing departments do things to suck the most out of users, I guess)
But I do not see this setting anywhere in today's Yahoo "new and improved interface". I can't even verify.
Anyway, the date problem appears to be identical on both accounts.

In Languages, nothing appears. I am loathe to add anything, since I have no clue what unwanted consequences would appear down the road.
Both accounts have their web interface in English.

Thanks much.

In general, your system and the webmail service needs to use the same format. That is, if Yahoo lists mail in MM/DD format, then your system needs to use MM/DD format else it will get confused. In the webmail service, this this is usually based on the region you specify, but I can't seem to get Yahoo to do anything. Even changing my language doesn't do anything (and I still get an "unknown host" error in Firefox, though it seems to work in other browsers on the same account).

But, anyway, I'll be releasing a webmail update soon that should fix the problem. The problem being that PP is not getting the data from the message source, which normally supercedes the header information from the inbox. The inbox is where the MM/DD | DD/MM format comes into play, so that's why you're seeing mixed up results.

The update has been posted -- WebMail v4.2.1. To update immediately, go to Help / About and press the "Check Version" button; you may need to restart POP Peeper for the update to take effect.

Messages that have already been cached with the invalid data may need to be downloaded again, see this FAQ:

Let me know if you still have any issues.

Jeff,

It works perfectly. Thank you so much!
I've meant to tell you, how much I really appreciate both your technical mastery and your great responsiveness.
If only more people were as competent technically and as reactive as you are.

Thanks again
