POP Peeper v4.4: Common issues (and solutions)

Post by Jeff »

Here are some of the common solutions after upgrading to v4.4 and how to resolve them:

POP Peeper reports "certificate has expired" for certain imap/pop3 servers (notably: yahoo.com)

Solution: The fix for this has been released in POP Peeper v4.4.2.

POP Peeper hangs at startup. The main window may not show at all or is incomplete (no text) and cannot be interacted with.

Solution -- see the following guide for fixing this issue:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6839&p=34487#p34487
Note: The fix for this has now been released in POP Peeper v4.4.1.

POP Peeper is reporting the following error: "certificate failed: certificate signature failure (7)"

Solution -- Update your SSL plugin:
http://www.esumsoft.com/products/pop-pe ... ugins/#SSL
or direct link to the web-installer:
http://data.esumsoft.com/files/POPPeepe ... lugins.exe
- be sure to install the SSL plugin and you'll need to exit POP Peeper to perform the update
After you install the SSL plugin, go to Help / About, and the SSL plugin's current version should be 1.0.2.11
Note: As of v4.4.1, the installer defaults to downloading the latest SSL plugin

POP Peeper is reporting other "SSL connection failed" errors such as:
- certificate failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (20)
- certificate failed: self signed certificate (18)

Solution -- This most likely means that the certificates are out of date in the Windows certificate store. Follow these instructions to download a list for some of the common certificates that may be missing or not updated in Windows. Note that this is not an exhaustive list, so if you still have an error, please let us know so that we can include it.

You can download the latest file here:
https://data.esumsoft.com/files/cacert.pem
-> right-click and "save as" the file
(note that certificate files should ONLY be downloaded over a secure connection)
* File updated May 16, 2017
* File updated Jun 13, 2017 (GoDaddy)

Place this file in the following folder:
{POPPeeper-Install-Folder}\SslCerts\
e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\SslCerts\
-> Since "Program Files" is protected, it may be necessary to save the file somewhere else (e.g. on your desktop) and then manually move the file to the correct location.

Note that the "SslCerts" folder may or may not exist. If it already exists, it's ok to overwrite the existing cacert.pem file.
It shouldn't be necessary to restart POP Peeper.

Legalese:
The cacert.pem file is distributed under the MPL v2.0 license.
The original source file is distributed by curl.haxx.se which is a modified source file obtained from Mozilla.org.
The attached cacert.pem file contains additional modifications.

The update is now available. If necessary, you can download POP Peeper. The first page of the installation will say v4.4.1. POPPeeper.exe has been updated to v4.4.1; all other files remain the same version.

Changes:
- Fix: Notification plugins in the base folder caused POP Peeper to hang at start
- Install: now includes a list of certificates (cacert.pem) that the Windows certificate store may not have
- Install: SSL plugin is now enabled/installed by default, regardless of if SSL plugin already exists, to ensure most up-to-date version
