Autocheck question(s)

Post by Cynyster »

Hello!
I am using Pop Peeper Pro 4.4.2 with the premium addon pack.

I primarily use Pop Peeper to check a large number of accounts (about 50)

Most of these e-mail accounts collect junk and I only like to clear them out once a day.

I would like to set them to never check unless I click the Check Mail Button (Ctl+M)

Is there an easy way to do that?

Or is it my best bet to set the interval to 48 hours(or some exceptionally large time interval) for those accounts.

Thanks for your time. :)

Hi Cynyster,

The simplest way to keep POP Peeper from checking any of your accounts is to click the icon with the green circle shown at the bottom right of the main interface. (See the screenshot shown below).
PP Global Mail Check icon
PP Global Mail Check icon

After you click on it, the icon will turn red, and PP will no longer automatically perform a mail check of any accounts until you click on it again.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

(1) - Doing a manual mail check will not re-enable the Global Mail Check function. You will have to click on the icon again to re-enable it.

(2) - If you EXIT the POP Peeper program or reboot your computer & restart PP, the Global Mail Check icon WILL be re-enabled and show green.
Thus, you will need to disable the Global Mail Check function again.

Alternatively, you can also right-click the POP Peeper icon in your Taskbar Notification area, and click on "Autocheck" to remove the check-mark beside it. This accomplishes the same thing. To re-enable the function, just right-click the PP icon and click on "Autocheck" again.

There are a couple of other ways to accomplish what you want, but I am providing you the easiest method here. Other members of The Esumsoft Team may stop by to provide you with their respective feedback later.

Feel free to post back if you have additional questions.

Best regards.

Just as spc3rd mentioned correctly of course these are two ways and yes the "simplest" ways to accomplish want you want as far as disabling POP Peeper Mail Checks so you can depend on only your own manual Mail Checks when you want to check for messages. And of course spc3rd also mentioned that if PP is exited or you reboot your system these two approaches will not hold as POP Peeper will revert back to enabling the Auto Check process if you do either of these two things (which can be a nuisance for those who do either).

On that point, while most people do not exit POP Peeper as there would be little point in doing so, a lot of people clearly do reboot their computer at least from time to time if not every day. I personally rarely reboot myself, but I would still have to remember to disable the POP Peeper Mail Check when I do and knowing me would likely forget #-o.... so thankfully there are other more permanent ways to accomplish what you want as well.

So on that point just as spc3rd mentioned, there are a few ways to disable the POP Peeper Mail Check and with that in mind if you happen to reboot your computer at least occasionally I would personally recommend the alternate method to disable the POP Peeper Mail Check as illustrated below however the choice is yours of course which is the part of the beauty of POP Peeper as there are generally multiple ways to accomplish equivalent results depending upon personal preferences.

By going to "Tools" > "Options" > "Mail Check" from the main POP Peeper interface and changing the global "Polling Interval" setting to "0" you will have disabled the POP Peeper Mail Check that has the advantage of remaining sustained even if you exit POP Peeper or better yet when ever you might more commonly reboot your computer which is likely for most people (so in this case you will not have to recall every time you reboot to disable the Mail Check function using the more "simpler" methods previously mentioned ). I would say that at least it's probably best for me as an older person because I tend to forgot things :D

Here is an illustration of what I mean in this screen-shot below:
THIS APPROACH WILL HOLD WHEN REBOOTING COMPUTER (click on image to enlarge - to then return to forum topic click on browser back-arrow)
THIS APPROACH WILL HOLD WHEN REBOOTING COMPUTER (click on image to enlarge - to then return to forum topic click on browser back-arrow)
If you notice the setting states "0: disable", so setting this Polling Interval (minutes) to zero will disable the Mail Check under all circumstances. I would add however you do need to also make sure you have the "Use one timer for all accounts" enabled which will override any account specific Polling Interval settings in the event you have done this. Note: the account specific Polling Interval values that have been set (if you have done so) will remain set but will be disabled by this setting so if you want to go back to doing Mail Checks they way were were before that includes the Account specific Polling Interval settings then enable the alternate "Use account timers" option again. All of this is explained in the "Help" > "Contents" > "Search" function by entering "Mail Check" in the search box and clicking on "Mail Check" in the search results list (see screen-shot below).

Now you asked what would be best in your case and on that point it crosses my mind that of your 50 accounts most of which you say you have a lot of SPAM so you presumably want to do manual Mail Checks for these accounts apparently but on the other hand you have a few accounts that you might want to have Mail Checks still done perhaps automatically at their own account specific Polling Interval settings. I've personally not tried this myself but if you were to do what is referenced above and then for those accounts without much SPAM you might want Mail Checks done automatically as scheduled events you could have the "Use account timers" option enabled and have those fewer accounts with minimal or no SPAM set to a Polling Interval specific to each of these accounts which if you have not done so already is accomplished by editing these specific accounts and setting their own exclusive (account specific) Polling Interval using the "Advanced" options in the account edit interface. (if you were to do this I would personally recommend the same Polling Interval for these accounts, especially if few in number) Perhaps Jeff may have more to say about this approach as well (especially since I have not tried this myself).

There is one other thing to keep in mind that should be clarified and that is if any of your accounts are using IMAP with the PUSH/Idle option enabled (which is by the way generally recommended) then for those accounts that support this protocol they will retrieve messages at the point when they reach their respective account Servers which can occur at any time so the Mail Check Polling Interval settings would not apply in these specific cases.

You can probably see now why the simpler methods are available to users. And also how vastly configurable POP Peeper can be for providing additional functionality when needed. I hope I haven't confused things, but I thought it best to provide you with the another alternate method that will hold your "Mail Check" settings under all circumstances.

Oh and one other thing on the subject of SPAM since you mentioned it, if you are using POP Peeper PRO you can filter out these frequent SPAM messages that you are getting and may not even need to do any of the above.... but then that is another topic in-and-of-itself. :D

As always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you for the detailed replies! Wow that was a pleasant surprise! =D>

What I ended up doing was taking the advise to set the global polling interval to zero.
and then setting the few specific accounts to 10-15 minute intervals.

Thank you all for the assistance ! :!: :D

At first, I thought lakrsrool was a mad genius for coming up with that creative solution but, alas, I tested it and it won't work. When you set the global polling interval to '0' you're completely disabling AutoCheck and assigning a separate polling interval to an account will not override this.

So, at this time, I think that the only solution would be to assign a "very high" polling interval to your spam accounts. Unfortunately, the highest value that you can assign in the GUI is 720 (12 hours), although I believe that this is only a GUI restriction and if you were to manually modify the ini file, you could set it to a higher value (note that it may or may not reset itself when you change settings in the GUI -- I don't think it does, but it's something you'll have to keep an eye on).

If you want to manually modify the polling interval for accounts:
0) find where your ini file is stored under Tools / Options / Storage
1) EXIT POP Peeper (very important)
2) Edit the ini file with your favorite text editor
3) For any account you want to change, do it like this:
Timer = 2880
(2880 minutes is 48 hours)
Note that if the "Timer" already exists for the account, you should edit the existing value; otherwise, you can add the line
4) save the ini file
5) Restart POP Peeper
-> make sure that Tools / Options / Mail check is set to "use account timers"

Also: I've added some notes for myself regarding this. One is to increase the cap to more than 720 (I'm not sure what that cap will be yet, perhaps even 7 days [10080 minutes]). Unfortunately, PP v4.5 is already set in concrete for release, otherwise I would have snuck it in there. Another note involves a future idea involving the ability to group accounts (and, in this regard, you could assign all your spam accounts to a single "spam" group, and then assign a polling interval to the group); I should mention that -- at this very moment -- this idea is nothing more than a few notes and ideas in my head, but it's something I've thought about for a while.

I wasn't sure the method I suggested would work which is the reason I said "I've personally not tried this myself...".

... At least it sounded like I was "on a role"....

I was hopeful that in the event there existed any accounts with account specific timer settings set that these specific accounts would be the exception to the global Polling Interval settings in the Main Menu as long as the "Use account timers" was selected in the Main menu Mail Check settings page otherwise I'm not certain what would be the relevance of the "Use account timers" since each account has a Polling Interval setting that would make the "Use account timers" setting redundant.... (I'll discuss further via email).
