Can't connect to AOL to send mail in POP Peeper Pro thru smtp.aol.com

Post by tomeastridge »

Is anyone else having trouble SENDING email thru smtp.aol.com? Last week I started noticing that eventhough I could receive my AOL mail in POP Peeper, I could not reply to the same email using POP Peeper and get an error that it cannot connect to the smtp server. The mail just sits in the outbox until manually deleted. I checked the settings and they are correct. I use the same smtp settings on my phone to send through AOL while at home with no problem. Also, I can send through AOL's interface using my desktop with no problem. Settings for sending mail are set to SSL Port 465 with authentication enabled. These are the settings that AOL asks for. This just seems to be an issue when sending through POP Peeper. My POP Peeper Pro software is up to date as well. I can't find what may be suddenly causing the issue. I get an error message pop-up in POP Peeper that says "could not connect to SMTP server - press OK to open the outbox" Thanks for any help.

Hi tomeastridge -- You could try changing to Port 587 instead of Port 465 to see if this helps for your Outgoing SMTP Configuration.

Lakrsrool...I thought I had tried that before but went back and set it for port 587 again just to be sure...and it still doesn't work. I get the same error: "Send Mail: Could not connect to SMTP server"

It's very odd because this just happened starting last week...at least that's when I noticed it. Up until then it was working fine. I have POP Peeper on 2 machines and get the same result...but those settings work fine when sending from my cellphone email for the same accounts from the house over the same wifi. It's just on the send. I receive email fine. Thanks for the suggestion, though...

Just another follow-up on this. I installed Thunderbird to see if it would have the same issues sending aol mail and it has no problem sending mail using port 465 or port 587. Still no remedy, though with POP Peeper.

I am frankly at a loss as to what could be your problem (I don't personally use AOL).

All I can say is that by doing the following we might get some insight into your problem which is from the main PP menu go to "File" > "Error overview..." and then click on the "Copy" button in the ensuing GUI and paste (right-click and select "paste") what was copied (to clipboard) here in this topic (don't be concerned if nothing is displayed in the Error Overview window). Doing so will provide us with details as far as your PP setup, i.e. details regarding your OS, specific versions of PP program, SSL, IMAP and SendMail plugins etc that may be helpful.

Also have you made any kind of changes at all to your computers security programs or security settings as of the time when this issue started?

Hi again tomeastridge, I didn't have the time to spend on my last post but now that I do I should add that it would actually be far better (than my suggestion above) if you would attempt to send a message and then when you get the "Send error" please follow the advice in THIS POST - CLICK HERE provided by Pete above in this topic which will not only provide the information I described above but would also give us more details into the actual error you are getting that can be very helpful beyond just providing us with the error itself that you have previously posted.

Also beyond the additional error information that doing the above will provide us with would you also please do a right-click on the account and select "Server info". One of the last things that this information will tell us (along with other details) is when the "last success" occurred based on the corresponding time-stamp. If you do have any successful attempts this will tell us that the issue is not necessarily totally persistent. So if you would, please copy this "Server info" and also paste that data into your reply in this topic as well as the Error Information originally requested by Pete in his post that includes a link to explain in detail how to do this.

Thanks. :D

Let me know if you're still having a problem.

This was reported via email on Friday and I was able to confirm the problem. However, I tested it again now, and it appears to be working again.

The original problem was with the SSL certificate. So the most likely resolutions are either that Windows pushed out a certificate update, or AOL changed the certificate on their end. If you still have a problem, try rebooting your computer as this may be necessary for Windows to update the local certificates.
