Mark as Read on 4.5 versus 3.8

Post by delaing »

I'm migrating over from 3.8.1 to 4.5 and trying to understand what seems to be a difference in behavior when I press Ctrl+Insert shortcut to Mark as Read all messages in the Message List.

Currently where I have 3.8 installed, when I hit this shortcut, it marks the messages as read so that they no longer are visible in Message List.
YET, they are not marked as read on the Gmail server, leaving them as unread so that when I go out to Gmail later, I can still see the messages that I might want to fully read via Gmail web interface.
However, from what I'm observing in 4.5 when I do the same action, the messages are marked as read in PP and on the Gmail server(?) which is not what I want to happen.
Perhaps there is a setting in 3.8 that I set ages ago that I need to mimic in 4.5, but I don't know what that might be. I'm not a PP Power User by any means; use it primarily as a way to watch my Gmail accounts and then get back to work. Or attend to a message if it is important.

So, how can I clear the message list in PP and have the messages on Gmail remain as unread?

Thank you,

The difference is that PPv4 will sync the read-state with the server; so when messages are marked as read in PP, the message will be marked as read on the server, and if a message is marked as read on the server, it will become marked as read in PP.

I can think of 3 viable solutions:

1) If you want to use the read-sync, instead of marking messages as "read" to hide them, you can simply "hide" the messages, which is a new feature in v4. There's various ways to do this:
a) message list: select messages, right-click one of them, mark as -> hidden
b) viewing the message: menu: message / mark as -> hidden
c) my personal favorite: add a keyboard shortcut for the message list and/or view-message (main menu: Tools / PPTweaker; Shortcuts page. You'll want "Main / Message: Hide/unhide" or "Message / mark hidden/unhidden"). I personally always hide from the main list, and I use the simple "H" keyboard shortcut.

2) Disable the read-sync so that it behaves like v3:
main menu: Tools / PPtweaker
On the 'misc' page at the very bottom, disable "IMAP: sync read/unread state with server"

FYI: this feature is enabled for new installs, but disabled for existing installs (ie. when you upgrade from v3 to v4) by default.

3) I added this one at the last second, but could be the preferred solution now that I re-read your question -- move messages out of the inbox into another folder. If you have POP Peeper Pro, you can move messages to another folder via POP Peeper; otherwise, use gmail.com.

Thanks for the great explanation.
I've chosen, for the moment, option (1c) using the same suggested shortcut. Will just require a bit of retraining on my end.

This does bring up a need for a small feature enhancement; another option in the list of commands to assign a shortcut.
"Message: Mark all hidden" so the user doesn't have to Select-All before hitting "H" to status all messages as Hidden.
Consider it.

No promises on whether it will make it, but I've added your request to my notes. Ctrl+A, H would be my recommendation in the meantime, but it looks like you've got that covered :)
