Just an update -- PP reported the 2nd message about 5 minutes ago (30 minutes after it was sent), and my phone just now reported it (so about 5 minutes after PP).

sportman13 - Please answer Jeff's question (in red):
Jeff wrote: Tue Jun 30, 2020 4:16 pm ... sportman13 -- is your gmail account tied to any other devices or do you have any other email clients checking it?
For the record -- I do not have any other devices of any kind Auto-Checking for messages (other than PP) -- and I have no issues (that I'm aware of) getting messages as expected using IDLE/Push in PP, primary Gmail account or otherwise.

To clarify -- so you DO have other Email Clients that have the same Gmail accounts that are setup as IMAP accounts with IDLE/Push enabled?

Many thanks for the feedback sportman13 -- the answer you provided regarding the first question (above) may be very helpful to Jeff. Image This is something that is unique to both you and Jeff that may be contributing to these kinds of Gmail IDLE/Push message delay issues you're both having. Jeff will be getting back to you on this.

Ok, I have an update on this, but just for the record, I just sent myself another test message (and, ftr, I always use a different gmail account to send from) and PP reported it immediately. Then I repeated it and again PP reported it immediately. This suggests the problem occurs sporadically.

Those kinds of results, and based on what I saw yesterday when I was able to produce 2 latent results (one of which -- as a reminder -- didn't appear at all in any device/inbox for 30 minutes), the problem is on Gmail's end (since the message eventually comes through, I suspect that the problem is that gmail is delaying the notification, perhaps due to server load). And it's possible that having multiple devices expecting notifications is a factor (and whether there's any favoritism on the device/app being notified is up for debate).

I've reviewed the relevant documentation (RFC #3501, in case anyone wants some light reading), and POP Peeper is doing what it's supposed to do.

That being said, I did see an opportunity to make a change here. Unrelated to this issue, over the years many people have reported that PP doesn't seem to do anything when it does a "check mail" and this is by-design because PP skips accounts that are idling. However, now (PPv5 b22), when a check mail occurs (either manual or automatic) PP will perform a very quick check to see if new messages have arrived. This will cause a status update, but it is *very* quick -- a fraction of a second (dependent on the server and other factors, of course); but hopefully it's sufficient to put people's minds at ease that PP is doing what it's supposed to.

To finish the thought on my previous post -- this change doesn't "fix" gmail not notifying of new messages, but it does mitigate the problem by performing this quick check at regular polling intervals; and it means you should be able to simply press the "check mail" button and POP Peeper will detect new mail for idling accounts.
