Assign shortcut to "dedicated" COMPOSE NEW MESSAGE

Post by willi.am »

I know it's possible to use CTRL + N to create a new message.

But in that case, the DEFAULT account is always used as the sender for that message.

I want to assign a shortcut to compose a new message with the SELECTED account as the sender for that message.

This behavior is "hidden" in the menu when you right-click on an account (Compose new message...).

When you use that option, a new message is created for the selected (right-clicked) account.

But I can't assign a shortcut to that menu option?

The default behavior of Ctrl+N will popup this prompt.

The account shown in the "Account to use for composing" will be the first account selected in the Accounts List.

Based on the behavior you're describing, I presume that at some point, you checked both boxes in this screenshot. This would result in the prompt not showing and it will always use the account that you had selected when you did that.

Here's what you'll need to do to change this behavior --

1) On the main menu, select Tools / Options
2) On the "General" page, enable "Reset confirmation prompts" (this will reset all such prompts, but it's necessary to see this prompt again)
3) Compose a message and you should see the above prompt

If you always want to use the first selected prompt, then only tick the "Do not show this prompt again" (NOT "use this account by default...").

If you tick the "use this account by default..." and NOT "do not show this prompt again", then you'll get a new option when you compose email (you'll still see this prompt, but there will be a new button on the top-right which allows you to easily compose using your default account or the selected account). This is the method that I personally used to prefer.

However, my new favorite method is to edit the entries in my address book and assign a "default account". This way, I don't have to remember which account to use when composing new email to them. You will have to remember to use Ctrl+B to open the addrbook instead of Ctrl+N.

Thank you. The tip for resetting my preferences worked (I guess I did hit the "do not show this popup" to quickly and forgot about it).

The other tip is also useful, so I have a default account now and am able to quickly select another account from that popup. Cheerz!
