Scribe is a free open source e-mail client that simply never finished Gmail's verification process. But instead of getting its OAuth blocked in Gmail it just displays a one time warning that can be easily bypassed via the "Advanced" option.
Beware I haven't tried in a long while, so it may not be the case anymore. But isn't it worth a chance for POP Peeper to try it too? I'm sure PP's author can try it in an alpha release just for himself. If it works, it can be an alternative (if the user prefers so) to completely removing Gmail's OAuth2 support.
Why removing Gmail's OAuth2 support instead of just being unverified?
Re: Why removing Gmail's OAuth2 support instead of just being unverified?
Oauth hasn't been completely removed -- that's why the Oauth2 credentials will continue to work (this was kind of a pain to implement, but I didn't want people regretting that they updated). But I also didn't want people enabling Oauth2 just to have it stop working (next week).
I had asked Google tech support what exactly would happen after the deadline. Their response had nothing to do with my question (this should come as a shock to no one that has ever dealt with Google support). I still have gmail accounts in PP using Oauth2; this is just to confirm why my support email will be filled to the brim of people complaining about their gmail accounts no longer working (despite my best efforts to forewarn and provide in-app help); but I have no whimsical fantasies that it will magically continue to work, I just don't know the exact date, ie. april 23 or april 24, time zones, etc.
I assume "a long while" is more than 1.5 years ago? POP Peeper has always been "verified". I'm pretty sure that there are/were severe restrictions on an "unverified" app (something like only 100 users). Google started making significant changes to Oauth in 2023. If you want to read more details, read the "why is this necessary" section of this blog post.

Sorry, looks like you're right, it seems Google no longer allows unverified clients...

There's a new method to keep using Gmail/Oauth2:
