I have added a new account (proton.me) and persistently get the error message “Bad connention”. Incoming server and outcoming server is a numeric code plus STARTTLS instead of an imap.server like the other accounts. Where else could the error be?

ProtonMail requires you to use their Proton Mail Bridge. Access to it requires one of their paid subscription plans.
FYI: 127.0.0.1 is always your local computer. So, in this case, POP Peeper will be connecting to the proton bridge app on your computer and not directly to the server.
