If you're not familiar with World Community Grid (WCG), they are an organization (NPO) whose mission is to create the largest public computing grid benefiting humanity. They have many active projects that are being researched such as cures for cancer, clean energy, nutritous rice and more. If you're interested in helping with their research, you can download an application that uses your computer's free time to work on these projects. I've been using it for several months and can testify that I do not see any side-effects of it running.
