v4.0.1 will not save updated passwords

Post by shank »

I have 17 different email accounts loaded in PopPeeper, from a range of domains and servers. Passwords for 2 of the accounts (one each Yahoo and Gmail) were recently changed, but for some reason cannot be saved; each time the application is closed, it appears to revert back to the old passwords for the 2 accounts, it is necessary to manually change each time.

Please advise.

Hi shank, did you "confirm" the password change(s) in your Pop Peeper "Edit Account" interface :?: (refer to image below, which is an optional step to help verify that your password change is what you intended).

Also try this before closing Pop Peeper after you're certain the password change is correct, in the Accounts list of the main PP interface select each of the account(s) with the changed password(s) and do a right/click then select "Check mail" from the context menu, after doing this do you get an error (see below regarding "Password failure errors" that you would get for your two respective accounts) or does the "Mail Check" complete successfully :?: (doing this will of course make sure the password in Pop Peeper matches the password for these two respective accounts in the Email Client assuming the "Mail Check" is successful)

You have mentioned that the two accounts are "Yahoo" and "Gmail" accounts that have this issue of not retaining passwords in Pop Peeper after Pop Peeper is closed and then opened again. The two errors below are what you would expect to get if the password was incorrect in Pop Peeper:
1) YAHOO "password error" in Pop Peeper: "Login Error ([AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] #MBR1212 Incorrect username or password.)"
2) GMAIL "password error" in Pop Peeper: "Login Error ([AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Invalid credentials Failure)"

Do you get these errors (above) after closing and then launching Pop Peeper again and checking mail :?:

Yes - the confirm password function was used, has no impact on the issue.

Once the passwords are changed, the error messages stop for the current session. Once Pop Peeper is closed, reopened, it is necessary to again update the password.

Different error messages are returned for each provider:
Gmail - Login Error ([AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Invalid credentials Failure)
Yahoo - Login Error: Check your Login Name and Password.

Other Gmail, Yahoo accounts do not return errors - although I have not attempted to change any other passwords since upgrading to v4.0.1.

Thank you shank for getting back with this information. I do not have an explanation myself as to how or why password changes are not remaining persistent in your case.

I have asked Jeff to take a look at this for you.

In the meantime if you happen to read this post before Jeff is able to get to this, can you please provide some additional information in the event this might be of some help to Jeff.

Are you able to log-in directly to the Email client on the web :?:

If it's not too much trouble could you please provide the entire error information :?: You're most likely aware of how to do this, but just in case this is done by clicking on the "yellow exclamation" at the bottom right of the main Pop Peeper interface.
Click here to open Error Overview window

To provide the error information in this topic then click on the "Copy" button in the "Error overview" popup window, click "OK" then post a reply here in this topic with this information (to paste to this topic, place cursor in reply, right/click in your reply to this topic and select "paste" or alternatively you can press CTRL+V to paste the error).

Here are a couple of forum topics that you may want to peruse at the point where Jeff responded that are perhaps somewhat similar to your problem however not so much to the point of "password changes not sticking" therefore may not be of any help unfortunately, especially considering that your issue only applies to accounts where you've changed the password so it would appear exclusively related to making this change.

YAHOO: Keeps telling me to check my Yahoo name and password (has to do with changing to IMAP, however since other Yahoo accounts you have are not an issue this may not apply)

GMAIL: Can't login Gmail login error (has to do with allowing "less secure apps" but since your other Gmail accounts are not a problem this is perhaps of no help in this case)

Entire error information was provided in the earlier post.

Both accounts are using IMAP protocol, "less secure apps" has been enabled for Gmail - do not appear to have an effect on the issue.

It sounds like the ini file that stores your settings (and accounts' passwords) may not be saving; for example, the file may be set to read-only.

Please let us know the location of your ini file:
1) From POP Peeper's main menu, select Tools / Options
2) Select the "Storage" page
3) Select and copy the value for "Ini location" (at the very top) and paste it in your reply

There are probably 2 possibilities:
1) If the location of the ini file is under "C:\Program Files..." then that means that Windows is not allowing POP Peeper to save the data (I'll provide further instructions in this case)

2) Otherwise, the file itself may just be set to "read-only" and you simply need to allow modifications:
a) Open the folder containing the ini file in Windows Explorer
b) Right-click on the ini file and select "Properties"
c) Near the bottom, make sure that "read-only" is not enabled; uncheck it and press OK
d) If it was previously set to read-only, go back to PP, select Tools / Options and press OK (this will force POP Peeper to save your ini file with the current data)

C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\poppeeper.ini

Sure enough - folder properties were set as read only. Unfortunately, it appears that Windows will not allow me to change this.

When you right-click on a folder, the "read-only" state is always in the indeterminate state (neither enabled nor disabled), even if the containing files/folders are all either enabled or disabled.

However, the problem is that the ini file is in the "Program Files" folder which is forced to be read-only by Windows UAC.

So what you need to do is:
1) Exit POP Peeper
2) MOVE (do not just copy) the file:
C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\poppeeper.ini
to
%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\POP Peeper\
(you can paste that into either the Windows "Run" prompt or a Windows Explorer address bar, press <enter> and it will open the correct folder). If the "POP Peeper" folder does not already exist, you'll need to create it (the "Roaming" folder *will* exist -- so just go into that folder, create "POP Peeper" and then move the ini file in there)

3) Restart POP Peeper

4) Now, you'll still need to update the accounts' passwords. Then try testing one of the accounts to make sure it works.

5) Exit and restart POP Peeper, test the account again and it should work.

Success - thanks!

BTW: poppeeper.ini already existed in the PP Roaming folder; I copied over the original copy.

Glad you got it working!

It sounds like what happened is that the v4 upgrade process successfully copied the file from "Program Files" into the "AppData" folder, but it didn't delete the original file (for whatever reason). POP Peeper always looks for the ini file in the local folder first (e.g. for portable installations) and since it found the file there, used that one instead of the one in "AppData."
