start minimized not working

Post by dosser »

since the last update to V4.4.1 PP always starts in full-window mode. Setting minimized is ignored at next startup.

How can i get PP start minimized ?

Can you please provide more details as to what exactly you are doing.

Are you exiting POP Peeper (right-click on system tray icon and selecting "Exit") and then later re-starting POP Peeper?

Or are you talking about POP Peeper starting up when you are booting up your computer?

Or is this after you close the POP Peeper interface via the "Close" control button and the opening POP Peeper via either a short-cut or the POP Peeper systray icon.

More details as to what exactly you are doing and what it is exactly that you want will be helpful. Clicking on the POP Peeper system tray icon will always open the POP Peeper interface in either the "Maximized" window or the "Reduced" (restore down) window depending upon in what form the interface had been previously closed.

I have the "Close button will minimize POP Peeper" option enabled in "Tools" > "Options" > "General" tab, so when clicking on the "Close" control button (Red "X") POP is then minimized but of course continues to run so that I will continue to get Email alerts when mail arrives.

Sorry I'm not exactly sure what it is your asking.

More information, like lakrsrool requested, is necessary, but I can provide some generic information:
- If you use the "run at Windows startup" option under Tools / Options, it should start minimized.
- Use the "-min" flag on the command-line to start minimized if you're starting it some other way (setting the option in a Windows shortcut to "run minimized" will not work)

POP always starts with a "reduced" windows , not maximized

i use "run at Windows startup" option under Tools / Options and PP does not start minimzed

there is no difference how i exit PP , PP always starts minimized

booting up the PC or starting PP within running Win7 makes no difference

if the option "Close button will minimize POP Peeper" is enabled or not , POP will not start minimized.

What ever state you close PP in (using "close" control button, upper-right of interface) then POP Peeper should open in the same state. Make sure you have maximized PP prior to when you close PP (click on the "Close" button in upper-right corner of interface), then the next time you open PP (click on short-cut or click on systray icon) PP will open the same way, maximized.

In this case you are talking about when you boot you computer (not when you "open" the PP interface), so are you saying in this case when the PP program starts it opens the PP interface?
dosser wrote:there is no difference how i exit PP , PP always starts minimized
Now I'm confused, I thought you have said PP does not start minimized? To clarify terms used, "starting" PP is when you start the executable program so it is then running. This occurs when you boot your computer and/or if you have exited PP and then started the PP process again by clicking on the executable file, either via a short-cut or going to your program listing and starting PP from there. On the other hand "opening" PP is when PP is currently running and you are opening the interface by clicking on a shortcut or clicking on the system tray icon.

To clarify, you are saying that when you boot your PC then PP starts with an open interface (maximized since you've said "start minimized not working") or if not what are you saying occurs?
dosser wrote:if the option "Close button will minimize POP Peeper" is enabled or not , POP will not start minimized.
The only time you would want PP to start minimized is when you might be booting your computer. Otherwise at the time you would "open" the PP interface is when you would typically want PP to open maximized (minimized would not be displaying the interface) or of course if you had PP "reduced" then PP would open in that state (which I can't imagine why you would want to do this).

Example:
Tools-Options-General.png
Tools-Options-General.png (13.92 KiB) Viewed 6196 times
With these settings; regarding the first option, when you boot your computer then PP will start the program in a minimized state (you will see the system tray icon displayed) and you will need to click on either a short-cut icon or the systray icon to "open" the PP interface. Once again are you saying that PP starts with the PP interface "open"? And the second option simply means that when you click on the "Close" control-button to close the PP interface then the PP interface will minimize so that you would then once again click on the systray icon to open the PP interface again.

Would you please provide a screen-shot of what you are getting when you "open" PP (click on the system tray icon).

Please post your ini location file path in this topic. To check this; from the main menu, select "Tools" > "Options", then select the "Storage" page. You should have something like this "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\POP Peeper...". Perhaps instead of this, do you have a file path that starts with "C:Program files..."?

There are a few terms that may be causing confusion that are quite often conflated of which I admittedly do myself that I'd like to cover that might help add clarification to the conversation (if I am oversimplifying by stating the obvious and you are aware of the differences below, regarding terms referencing the PP "process" versus the PP "GUI" in regards to the terms "Start" and "Open", then please scroll on down to the bottom of the post where you will find steps to check to see if your ini file might be set to "Read-only" and forgive me for all the excess verbiage :|).

Terms "Start"/"Exit" - Starting the POP Peeper program: As far as "starting" POP Peeper this is when the POP Peeper process (program) starts which is done when you boot your system (if the option: "Run POP Peeper at Windows startup" is enabled [checked]). Now if you have "Exited" POP Peeper by right-clicking on the POP Peeper icon in the system-tray and selected "Exit"
Exit PP.png
Exit PP.png (9.34 KiB) Viewed 6130 times
you have then stopped the POP Peeper process (program)in which case you would then need to start the POP Peeper process (program) again using the Windows start Program list or if you have a desktop POP Peeper icon clicking on that icon (which in this case if the POP Peeper process is stopped results in the same thing that occurs when booting the computer). All this time while the POP Peeper process (program) is running POP Peeper will check for incoming messages. On the other hand, to "open" the POP Peeper GUI to interface with the program while the POP Peeper process is running the interface has to be "opened" as explained below.

Terms "Open"/"Close" - Opening the POP Peeper interface (GUI): In regards to when you "open" POP Peeper, this is when you either double-click on the system tray icon (assuming "single-click" option is not used) or right-click the system tray icon and select "Open POP Peeper" or you click on a POP peeper desktop icon to "open" the POP Peeper interface window, while the POP Peeper process (program) is running. (Keeping in mind, the POP Peeper program is of course still running in this case whether you have the POP Peeper interface "open" or not). Of course by clicking on the red "X" in the upper-right corner of the POP Peeper interface you then "close" the POP Peeper interface but again the POP Peeper process (program) remains running (which is evidenced by the fact you will get message alerts when messages arrive) and the POP Peeper process is ONLY stopped by "Exiting" POP Peeper as mentioned above. All of this may not be fully understood by some who are not very familiar with computers in general that much.

In any case, in regards to POP Peeper sustaining its window size, you might want to check to see if your poppeeper ini file happens to be set to the "Read-only" (right-protected) state.

But before we check this I have a question (in reference to my explanations above specifically regarding "terms") in order to help clarify what the specific problem is that you are reporting. If your only problem is when you "close" the POP Peeper interface and then "open" POP Peeper again the window size is the same but is not what you want (not maximized) then all you should need to do is maximize the POP Peeper interface before you "close" POP Peeper and that size should be maintained. More specifically, If you are saying when you click on the POP Peeper icon to "open" PP that POP Peeper "opens" the interface window small (not maximized) as illustrated in the screen-shot below?
Starting PP is smaller screen.png
If this is what is happening, if you hover over the "maximize" (blue box button in this screen-shot) button you will get a tool-tip message that says "maximize" as illustrated. If you click on that to maximize the PP interface window and then "close" POP Peeper (click on red "x" in upper right corner) and then "open" POP Peeper again by clicking on the POP Peeper icon as before, does POP Peeper "open" maximized this time or smaller again as illustrated in the screen-shot? Now if you "exit" POP Peeper (that is right-click on the POP Peeper icon in the system try and select "Exit") then "start" POP Peeper again, does POP Peeper "open" maximized this time or does it "open" once again as before in a smaller screen? On the other hand, if this has been your problem and POP Peeper now "opens" maximized as it had been when you "exited" it before then perhaps your problem is solved as it was just a matter of leaving the GUI in the desired size when doing a GUI "close". You might want to reboot your computer to see if you are now getting what you want as far as when you "open" POP Peeper (assuming this is your problem). On the other hand, if the problem is when POP Peeper "starts" up (at computer boot up or when you "start" POP Peeper again after "exiting"), i.e. POP Peeper does not "start" minimized but instead the interface "opens" when you "start" POP Peeper then this is an entirely different situation the cause of which I'm not at all certain based on what we know from previous posts (perhaps what is outlined below might help if applicable).

Check to see if your ini file might be set to "Read-only":
1) Using Windows Explorer go to where your ini file is located (based on the path in your screen-shot)
2) There will be an ini file named poppeeper as illustrated in the screen-shot -- right-click on that file and select "Properties"
Click on image to enlarge for better viewing
Click on image to enlarge for better viewing
3) On the bottom of the 'General' tab, make sure that "read-only" is not enabled -- that is uncheck this "Read-only" option if it is checked (also, if there's an "unblock" button, press it)
ini properties - Read-only unchecked.png
4) Oh and be sure to click the "OK" button to save any change.

The previous state of whether PP was minimized or not won't affect if PP is minimized the *next* time you start PP. The only thing that will affect if PP starts minimized is the command-line.

So to test how it works while already running Windows:
1) Exit POP Peeper (make sure it's completely exited; ie. run Windows Task Manager, check the "Processes" tab and make sure that POPPeeper.exe is not in the list)
2) Run POP Peeper from the command-line (use the "run" prompt) like this (your path may be different, this is the most common):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\POPPeeper.exe" -min

If there are 2 startup locations trying to start POP Peeper, then you may get the behavior you're seeing: the first instance will start POP Peeper minimized, and the 2nd instance will tell the first instance to show the window. That's the intended behavior. To see if that's the case, run:
msconfig
click on the "startup" tab and look through the list to make sure that there's only one case of POP Peeper.
