PP Not Working With Yahoo Mail?

Post by tb75252 »

I just downloaded and installed PP 4.4.2. I promptly inserted the credentials of my Yahoo Mail account and proceeded to test things.

PP does not seem to be able to login into Yahoo Mail. The bottom bar shows: Connecting... -> Logging In... And it gets stuck at the "Logging In..." message! I am absolutely sure that I inserted the right Yahoo Mail credentials when I created the account, so I think that the problem is somewhere else.

Is there anything in particular that I must do in order for PP to work with Yahoo Mail?

Welcome to the forum tb75252,

As a new member of the Forums, the Esumsoft Team welcomes you and recommends that you review the following Sticky: Information for new users and forum members. This link provides important information about the Forums and POP Peeper as well as additional helpful resources.

As to your issue, please provide us with the answers to just a few questions for now:
1) What company is your Email provider (Cox, AT&T etc)?
2) What "Server type" are you using (IMAP, POP3, Yahoo) for your Yahoo accounts in POP Peeper?
3) Does the POP Peeper Mail Check continue to hang in the the "Logging In..." stage indefinitely (what eventually occurs if anything else)?
4) Please go to "Tools" > "Options" > "Storage" and tell us what your "ini location" and "Data path" displays (copy/paste values to this topic).

Thanks

I don't quite understand the question. I am using Yahoo Mail which is a web-based email service. I would like to log into Yahoo Mail with PP no matter who my Internet service provider is. Does that answer your question?

2) What "Server type" are you using (IMAP, POP3, Yahoo) for your Yahoo accounts in POP Peeper?
I tried both IMAP and POP3. I keep on getting the "Logging in..." message. Eventually things time out.

3) Does the POP Peeper Mail Check continue to hang in the the "Logging In..." stage indefinitely (what eventually occurs if anything else)?
Eventually it times out and a yellow exclamation point appears in the PP icon located in the System Tray.

4) Please go to "Tools" > "Options" > "Storage" and tell us what your "ini location" and "Data path" displays (copy/paste values to this topic).
ini location: C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\poppeeper.ini
Data path: C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\data

tb75252 -- try using Server Type = IMAP and then press the "OAuth2" button and follow the instructions.

I've done some testing and Yahoo does seem to timeout when you provide invalid credentials ("invalid credentials" is a generic term in this case: Yahoo may not accept your login/password if OAuth2 is required).

Also, this is somewhat unrelated, but this is a concern for other potential problems:
ini location: C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\poppeeper.ini
Data path: C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\data

Unless you're using WinXP or you've disabled UAC, using that setting means that Windows won't allow POP Peeper to save settings or data. What I recommend is that you:
1) Exit POP Peeper
2) Move (not just copy):
C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper\poppeeper.ini
to:
%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\POP Peeper\
3) Restart POP Peeper
4) Main menu: Tools / Options / Storage; clear/empty the "data path"
5) Press OK

Voilà:
--- Version ---
OS: Windows 7 (x64)
POP Peeper: 4.4.2.0
Webmail: 4.4.4.0
SSL: 1.0.2.11
IMAP: 4.4.2.0
SendMail: 4.4.2.0

--- Error ---
<username edited>@yahoo.com [0: POP3] ['pop.mail.yahoo.com' (995) SSL: 1] [Smtp: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com' (465) SSL: 1] [Consec: 3]
- Error ([SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later.)
I know for a fact that there is nothing wrong with Yahoo Mail's server because I am able to log into it using Firefox and Internet Explorer.

In the meantime, I think I know what my problem was. Here's the text of an email that Yahoo sent me early on this morning:
Your account is currently not enabled to sign in from apps that do not meet modern security standards (ex. Older versions of mail and calendar apps such as Outlook). As a result, we prevented a sign in to your Yahoo account.

We strongly recommend that you switch to Yahoo's apps such as Yahoo Mail on desktop and mobile and remove your account from all other less secure apps.

If you still want to use an app that uses less secure sign in, go to https://login.yahoo.com/account/security#other-apps and turn on "Allow apps that use less secure sign in". This is not recommended and may leave your account more vulnerable to compromise. To learn more, please visit our help page: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN27791.html.

Yahoo blocked this sign in attempt, but if it looks suspicious to you or it's not from an application that you're using, go to https://login.yahoo.com/account/change-password and change the password for your account.

Sincerely,

Yahoo
After I went to the link and turned on "Allow apps that use less secure sign in", everything went fine.

One more question: Should my server type be IMAP or POP3?

The "IMAP" protocol is recommend (either will work however).
Note:

If you do the following when using "IMAP" as recommended by Jeff then you would not need to enable "Allow apps to use less secure sign in" (while this will solve your problem, using "OAuth2" provides the best security for you).

The text in parentheses -- "[SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later." -- comes directly from Yahoo's server. While the information they provide is not very informative (nor correct as "trying again later" won't work unless you change the setting you did), the error is likely because your account requires OAuth2 (something that Yahoo has been forcing on users, but they have not done a very good job of announcing), and which the POP3 protocol does not support.

Please see my previous reply for the optimal solution. Using OAuth2 is recommended; whether you want to change the setting back to prevent "less secure apps" is your decision. About the only thing it does is let you know which apps support oauth2 or not.

Something to keep in mind as well and that is by using "less secure apps" you will be randomly getting the following nag prompt from Yahoo if you happen to log-in to Yahoo mail on the web:
You will need to click on the "No, I understand the risks" option pointed out each time you get this Yahoo nag prompt
You will need to click on the "No, I understand the risks" option pointed out each time you get this Yahoo nag prompt

I've seen this type of message too. Usually I am able to login after repeatedly trying (on the same device) by clicking the Start Over icon.
I don't really understand why Yahoo sends out this message given that the device I'm using to sign in is the one that I always use...

Is this the same account that you posted about HERE this morning or is this a different account?

What version of Internet Explorer do you have installed?

Based on the screenshot, you may be using an older OS whose supported IE version may not be compatible with OAuth2.

In that case, you'll need to either:
- keep using IMAP, but allow less secure apps so that OAuth2 isn't required
- Switch to webmail (it's very possible that webmail isn't supported on your device since it uses technology similar to OAuth2)

Jeff - Is there any way to force PP to use some other browser on the OS other than the built in IE libraries? I'm using WINE to have PP run on MAC, so for whatever reason Yahoo thinks it can't support the wine explorer browser.. If I install FireFox in Wine, can I force PP to use the FireFox to authenticate and use OAuth/Webmail?

Thanks for all your help!

Ok, then I guess I have to battle with Wine to see if I can get it to login to yahoo mail... Or I guess maybe somehow the webmail plugin will start working again :)

Although Yahoo says they no longer support IE at all... So I'm not sure this is the right approach to take...

Any hints on how PP calls into iexplorer.exe ? Does it just look for certain DLLS to render the window, or does it launch the entire process?

As stated in the other thread: If you stick with IMAP/POP3/SMTP using SSL/TLS (but not OAuth2), you should be fine.

WebMail support for certain providers like Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail/Outlook is mostly provided for legacy and for a small percentage of people who cannot use IMAP (e.g. restrictive corporate firewalls) -- IMAP is the better protocol, even if you cannot use oauth2.

We just opened a Yahoo account and wanted to add it to our Pop Peeper accounts but it doesn't work. We tried POP3, IMAP, Yahoo and even Oauth2. Nothing works.

Welcome to the forum NPeeper,

Please provide more details if you can - such as, specific steps you're taking, what exactly happens when "it doesn't work" and if you're getting errors then post the errors in the forum topic etc. (if you're not familiar with how to capture a screen-shot and/or to in general post information to a forum topic - here is a link that may be of some help: How to take a screenshot & attach/insert it into your post or a PM. Specific to "errors" you might be getting, click HERE for details on how to post this information to a topic as well. Also, make sure that you redact any personal, i.e. remove private sensitive, information -- when posting any of this additional information.)

What 1) version of POP Peeper and 2) what Windows Operating System are you using?

Do you have other Yahoo accounts that are working?

Have you tried rebooting your computer?
