Viewing message

Post by ppuser »

When double-clicking on a message to view it, if that message is rather large (i.e. has an attachment), it's not fully loaded, just a part of it. Then you have to press "Get Entire" to fully retrieve it from the server.

The question is: is there a place where you define how many bytes will be loaded, or perhaps define what parts of the message to load (i.e. in such cases, i wouldn't want PP to load any part of the attachment, just the text)?

It depends on the protocol used to retrieve the message (ie. pop3 or imap).

If you're using POP3, "preview" allows you to define how many "lines" of the message to retrieve. And there's no way to see all the attachments unless the entire message is retrieved. This is a severe limitation of the protocol, so let's assume you're not using POP3.

If you're using IMAP, retrieving a "preview" of the message will retrieve the plain text and html text of the message, but not the attachments (there are some exceptions); although you'll still be able to see what attachments are in the message.

If you have POP Peeper Pro, you can create rules to tell POP Peeper to retrieve the entire message. For example, by default, I have PP set to retrieve a preview of the message. I get a daily digest from USPS to see what's coming in my mail that day, and this comes in the form of image attachments. So I created a rule such that mail from USPS gets "retrieve entire" and I'm able to view my mail without having to "retrieve entire" manually. You could do something similar with size, sender, subject or whatever.

Well, unfortunately i am using POP but in any case, i remembered there was a way to limit the number of data fetched (number of lines as you say), but i couldn't find it in Options (neither PP's options nor PPTweaker's). Can you please guide me to it?

I've read you've changed your ways, but for posterity:

Global setting -- main menu: Tools / Options / Message Retrieval (POP3 retrieval option must be set to "Preview")
Per-account -- Edit account / Advanced (Retrieval option must be set to "preview");
-> for "Advanced" page, you must enable Tools / Options / General / Advanced options
