How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
I tried to install POP peeper on Windows standard account but to no avail. I used required Windows administrative permissions to install POP peeper on standard account but it was installed on Windows administrator account instead. Is it possible to install and use POP peeper on Windows standard account?
Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
Unless you're using WinXP, all Windows accounts are generally "standard" accounts, but you do need to provide admin access to install POP Peeper (because programs generally install to C:\Program Files\ which requires admin access). Elevating permissions will not install POP Peeper to a different user's account; did you instead switch users before installing, as that could have the problem you describe? If that's the case, then you should install POP Peeper as the user you want to use, and just grant permission when it asks for admin.
The alternative is to use the zip download (available on the download page) and then extract it to wherever you want (e.g. C:\POP Peeper\). This does not require elevated permissions.

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
I have Win8 and I have 2 accounts: an admin user account and a standard user account. I installed POP peeper on a standard one and (as said earlier) used required Windows administrative permissions to do so. I closed POP peeper and later when I wanted to open it again….. it wasn`t there! It disappeared from the standard user account and instead it appeared on the admin user account. I got quite baffled. I uninstalled POP peeper and followed your instructions – I used the zip download…. I installed POP peeper again this time without any admin permissions. However, the situation was similar - I closed the program and when I wanted to open it again, it wasn`t there! This time POP peeper wasn`t on the admin user account, either. The last resort – I looked at the catalogue where I extracted it to (standard account - C:\POP Peeper\...), created a shortcut of POP peeper and pinned it to the start screen. Now everything is fine. I should have pinned the shortcut to the start screen in the first place! How silly of me. Thank you for your help

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
The supplied Pop Peeper desktop icon that is placed on the desktop when installed should have opened Pop Peeper which can also be pinned anywhere else (start-menu, task-bar etc) other than desktop (a short-cut should not have needed to be created).

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
After I installed Pop peeper there was no Pop Peeper desktop icon on the desktop, start screen, in the apps view (where you can find all the apps and programs) or anywhere else. That`s why I eventually created the shortcut and pinned it to the start screen.
Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
Since it's working now, this may not be worth looking into (or maybe it is), but when you say, "I closed the program and when I wanted to open it again, it wasn`t there!" -- do you mean that it's not in the tray?
There could be a couple of reasons for this:
1) Windows is hiding the icon. In Win8, click on the little arrow to the left of the displayed tray icons and select "customize." Then look for POP Peeper in the list and set it to "show icon and notifications"
2) There's a feature in POP Peeper that will hide the icon if you don't have any new messages:
From POP Peeper's main menu, select Tools / Options;
Select the "Tray icon" page
Make sure that "hide tray icon if mailbox does not contain new messages" is not enabled

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
I meant the icon was hidden in the tray but there was no desktop icon on the desktop, start screen or in the apps view.
1) As you suggested, I had already chosen the icon from the the list of the hidden icons in the tray and set it to "show icon and notifications" but it didn`t work – it showed – “the icon is not active” and it wasn`t displayed in the notification area.
2) "Hide tray icon if mailbox does not contain new messages" is not/was not enabled.
I`ve been using Pop peeper for quite a few years now but so far I`ve had one Windows user account. The problem occurred after I I had created the other Windows user account.
I always set it the way it does not run at Windows startup and I run/open Pop peeper manually by clicking on the program icon. Tools/Options/General - “Run Pop Peeper at Windows startup” is not enabled. I suppose it might have caused the problem somehow this time but still I`m curious to now why the icon did not appear on the desktop or the start screen after installing the program as it usually does.
Anyway, it`s not so important now. I`m glad I fixed the problem. I`ve tried using various email programs or notifiers but wasn`t satisfied with them. Pop peeper is my favourite email notifier. I can use it again. Thank you for your support!

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
If you remove Pop Peeper from Windows start-up then the Pop Peeper icon will not display in the systray (as I understand it) the next time you start Windows (for the icon to be in the systray Pop Peeper has to be running). And in that event (absent a desktop icon) you would always have to go to your Windows "Start" button and select the Pop Peeper executable from the Pop Peeper folder in the "All Programs" list at which time Pop Peeper would then be running and as a result the Pop Peeper icon would at that time be present in the systray. Not starting Pop Peeper at Windows start-up would be the equivalent situation as if you had "Exited" Pop Peeper (i.e. right-click on systray icon and selected "Exit" for example) at some point which as you know the Pop Peeper icon would no longer reside in the systray in that case simply because it is no longer running.Kate wrote: I always set it the way it does not run at Windows startup and I run/open Pop peeper manually by clicking on the program icon. As to why you did not have a desktop icon, I'm not sure about this as I don't recall if there is an option to check to have this done when installing Pop Peeper or not. In any event I would assume this is done by default but to this point Jeff would be able to answer that question since it's not something I've paid much attention to when installing so I simply can't recall (it may be that the install does not actually create a desktop icon, I just don't remember

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
Ok, I *think* I finally understand your scenario now. Installing the zip version was bad advice, because that will not create any shortcuts.
To create a desktop shortcut, you do need to make sure that it's selected during the installation wizard (exe installation only) -- it's not enabled by default, so you would have to select that option. That might explain that.
But what's the most puzzling is that you said it wasn't even listed in the start menu? Or, I guess you said the "start screen" which may be slightly different. To be honest, I never used Win8 that much to understand how the start screen worked. I can tell you that "POP Peeper" does appear on my start screen, but I never used Win8 for anything other than testing my own software.
So does POP Peeper appear in the "start menu" (right-click on start screen, select "all apps" on the bottom-right -- I'm sure you already know this, I'm reminding myself for when I try to find it again next time
) Using this method, I see the 4 icons that would appear in the normal start menu (POP Peeper, help, on the web and uninstall).
oh, btw, I did create another account and made it admin, and then installed PP v4.1.1 and enabled the "desktop icon" -- the icon did appear on the desktop. However, I did not run any tests as to whether it would be added to the start screen and/or start menu.

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
Here is my adventure with Pop peeper in chronological order
:
1) only one account – admin account:
I installed Pop peeper and the icon was created by default during the installation. I had been using Pop peeper for 3 years successfully
Last weekend - I removed everything and reinstalled Windows. I created two Win accounts: an admin one and a standard one.
2) two accounts – an admin one and a standard one:
I installed Pop peeper using regular installation ( I guess that`s what you meant by exe installation) on a standard account. The program worked, I created new email accounts, downloaded emails successfully, closed the program… And then I wasn`t able to open the program again as the icon had not been created!
I uninstalled Pop peeper.
3) two accounts – an admin one and a standard one:
I installed the zip version on a standard account. This time the icon wasn`t created, either so I created a shortcut and pinned it to the start screen. The programs works well now
I find it puzzling why the icon was not created….
I did not say “it wasn't even listed in the start menu”. I said “start screen”. Originally Win8 didn`t have “start menu”. I guess “start menu” was replaced by “start screen” http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... d-tutorial
POP Peeper does appear in the "start screen", “apps view” and the desktop now. But of course it did not appear earlier and it caused the confusion.
Jeff, after creating another account, did you install Pop peeper on the admin one or on a standard one? It might make the difference when it comes to the disappearing icon

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
Forewarning: don't take offense to my arguments; I just want to make sure that there's not something I'm missing so that it can be fixed if necessary. And I've been told that I like to argueI installed Pop peeper and the icon was created by default during the installation

"The icon" you're referring to -- I assume -- is the desktop icon which can be used to start POP Peeper. I don't think that the installation has ever defaulted to creating a desktop icon (as a user, I get annoyed when programs -- especially programs that are designed to run at startup like an AV program -- create a desktop icon without asking me; and even more annoyed when they add it again when the program is updated; PP is intended to run at startup so I don't have the installer enable "desktop icon" by default). Just to double-check, I went back to v3.6 (2010) and v3.8 (2011) -- neither defaulted to enabled. However, those versions had a much smaller list of options to install and so maybe you saw it back then and enabled it at the time. The desktop icon would remain on the desktop even if in future versions of PP installs you didn't bother to enable "desktop icon".
This is where I was getting confused at the beginning because I wasn't completely sure what you meant by that (now I know you specifically mean the desktop icon). But there are other ways to start PP. For example, opening Windows Explorer to C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Peeper and double-clicking on POPPeeper.exe (this is essentially what the "desktop icon" shortcut does). This is actually what I thought you meant when you originally said "it wasn't there" (or something to that effect) -- that the files were no longer available. Further, there's the "All apps" method that I mentioned in my previous post. I'm not experienced with Win8, but I'm pretty sure that that is the equivalent of the traditional "start menu" (I have Win8.0 installed, fwiw). I don't know how Win8 decides which icons to place on the start "screen" but I've always been under the impression that it only shows icons there after they've been run a couple of times (ie. so that Windows knows that you like to use that particular program or something). And then I wasn`t able to open the program again as the icon had not been created!
The one thing I'm still not sure about is if you have gone back through the standard/exe installer and made sure that you ticked the "Desktop icon" to see if that works (delete the existing shortcut before installing it if you really want to test it). If you don't want to mess with something that's already working, I completely understand

Standard. Was that wrong?Jeff, after creating another account, did you install Pop peeper on the admin one or on a standard one?
Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
I`m not a professional and I don`t have a vast knowledge on computers so I`m afraid I won`t be able to argue with you a lot
I wanted to say something I noticed and something which is based on my own experience. My experience is that after installing a program in Win8, an icon of the program appears in the apps view (where you can find all the apps and programs) and in the start screen. When I installed pop peeper, the icon wasn`t displayed in either the apps view or the start screen.
When I said the icon didn`t appear in the desktop, I only remarked it wasn`t there as well as in the apps view or the start screen. I desperately wanted to find pop peeper in my computer so I looked for it everywhere including the desktop. Perhaps I shouldn`t have mentioned the desktop while describing my problem. It only caused unnecessary misunderstanding.
BTW, I also find it irritating when too many icons appear in the desktop. I like to keep the desktop tidy so there are only a few icons there and the rest is in the start screen

Re: How can I make POP peeper work on Windows standard account?
Well, thank you for reporting it regardless -- I always want to know if something isn't working as intended in case it can be addressed. Since I wasn't able to duplicate the problem, I'm not sure what can be done.
I did do some searching and I found this, which could be relevant:
(don't read the article, I'm only including it for reference)
How do I get program icons to appear on windows 8 screen
near the bottom of the page, someone says this:
"Reading on the web, it seems that missing desktop icons and missing files in folders are a common problem with Windows 8. I must have saved the same file five times before I realized it was not going to appear on its own without a special step taken. "

Thank you, Jeff. I really appreciate your help. This article explains a lot.
