Pop Peeper 4.4 problem

Post by Computeruser »

This morning Pop Peeper 4.3 advised that 4.4 was available. I have upgraded before and so I upgraded today.

My main email account that uses POP3 SSL on port 995 did not work. I got an SSL error at the bottom of the Account setup window.

I uninstalled and reverted to Pop Peeper 4.3 and the email account collects mail just fine.

I see in the list of enhancements that SSL security has changed. This seems to be where I get the issue.

Is there a way to fix this?

Thank you.

Please provide more information, including:
- What OS are you using?
- What is the POP3 server name?
- What was the error? You don't necessarily need to re-install v4.4 if you don't remember.

Thank you for responding.

Operating System is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Version 1703 Build 15063.296
Pop Server is pop.vex.net
Error received is: SSL connection failed (certificate failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (20))

I did a fresh install of Pop Peeper 4.4 on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Virtual Machine and got the same error.

Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

From another post here, I added a certificate exception using PPTweaker. All is working now with Pop Peeper 4.4

Many thanks. I appreciate your assistance.

I've tested that email server and installing the updated cacert.pem should fix the problem. See the information here (bullet 3):

Be sure to remove the exception after installing the updated file.

I have sent a request to the email support people (who I know in person) and hopefully they will add the certificate over the next day or two.

According to the post by Jeff just above yours if you click on the link included in his post and follow the steps in the topics point 3 of that link your issue should be resolved. According to Jeff's post the cacert.pem file only needs to have the local certificate added based on his test results of the "pop.vex.net" server that you are using. Also as noted you need to be sure and remove the exception after installing the updated file.

Please post your results, especially if you still get an error after following the steps outlined in point #3 and removing the Certificates exception.

Computeruser -- I don't believe the problem is on their end. POP Peeper checks the SSL certificates from the server with certificates that you have locally to verify that the certificate from the server is valid. The error you're getting suggests that you don't have the local certificate to verify what the server is sending. This local certificate that you need is in the cacert.pem file that you can download and install. Alternatively, you can now update to the v4.4.1 download in the same announcement thread, which includes the updated cacert.pem.

Thank you both. I misunderstood about where to apply the certificate.

Jeff - I just downloaded and installed 4.4.1 and removed my exception and no issues.

Thank you so much both.
