I like Pop Peeper to assign my Web Browser!

Post by techmanc »

Well as the title states I like Pop Peeper to assign my Web Browser!

The current method of trying to use the email links does not work that well trying to copy and paste to a different source.

Whats happening in my case I find I need to change my favorite browser Firefox to Chrome to open some links that work better a lot of my steaming sites like DirectTV Now only work with the Chrome browser and other video site are using less resources than Firefox.

But I still use Firefox for all my other website needs its no longer my default browser with my Windows 10 Pro systems.

I hope I am explaining my problem well enough but I post this now for comments and and feedback.

If I understand correctly, you want to leave your system default browser as Chrome but would like for POP Peeper to open links in Firefox....

If so then as I understand it, by going to "Tools" > "PPtweaker" > "Misc2" you can enter the path to your Firefox browser in the "Browser to launch URLs" box for the browser that will be used for links in your messages in POP Peeper and still have your system use the Chrome browser as your default browser.

That works great and that for that tip as its answering my op but I see my problem is needing to be able to open each email as needed to its preferred browser like holding a hotkey to open with Firefox and open it in Chrome without the hotkey that would work any settings to do that?

I'm not aware of a method to do what you want exactly since clicking on a URL link is going to open in the browser you have it set to use, however there are a number of apps that provide ways to make modifications to the windows right-click context menu which would presumably allow you to right-click on links to redirect them to a browser of choice, which is a round-about-way does what you want. One of these apps is Right Click Enhancer v4.5.2 that can do the following for example:
App that would provide a way to redirect to a selected browser from the Windows right-click context menu.
App that would provide a way to redirect to a selected browser from the Windows right-click context menu.
There are also ways to modify the Windows right-click: How to Add Any Application to the Windows Desktop Right-Click Menu.

I have not tried any of the two options above so cannot vouche for either one (however I can for the 3rd option below that I use).

Another option that does not directly apply to your goal but FWIW, I use Pale Moon for my default browser and there is an extension that provides a way to redirect any tab to any other browser that you have installed on your computer:
A RIGHT-CLICK on any tab will provide a list of installed browsers that can be selected to alternately open the tab right-clicked on.
A RIGHT-CLICK on any tab will provide a list of installed browsers that can be selected to alternately open the tab right-clicked on.

This extension is also available in FF, so if you have made FF the browser to open in POP Peeper as suggested previously then this "Open with" extension could be used to open a webpage in another selected browser. This of course requires opening the website (open tab) in a second browser so takes a second step to use the browser of choice so does not specifically apply to your question. That said, the extension has various ways it can be used so you might be interested in taking a look at the extension I've provided above.

Unless I hear from otherwise suggesting otherwise, I don't think that this has very wide appeal.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if there already exists some type of "URL manager" that does what you'd want. That is, it could set itself as the default URL prototype handler in Windows and whenever you click on a link that sends the link to Windows to handle it (as POP Peeper does), then instead of a browser opening the URL, the "URL Manager" would get it and then ask you what browser you wanted to use; and pass the URL off. Even better is that it automatically opens the URL if you've previously told it to use (and save) a particular browser for that URL.

If a 3rd party utility like that would interest you, let me know if you find one, as I might find a use for it myself... :) [admittedly, not for POP Peeper, for which I just use the default browser; but I have another personal app I wrote that could benefit from having something like that]

So I tried enhanced right click and still was not able to see if I could get it to work as it complicated program to learn so I cant recommend it personally but I figured out a great solution for myself and anyone else using a web mail program lie my moved verizon acct to AOL email.

When I open the email directly from AOL to Chrome or Firefox the links open in their res pective browsers so I no longer need to worry about getting a fix using PopPeeper :D
