Asterisk in Time column

Post by chrisb »

Running 5.0.0.0 with Plus Pack. What is the meaning of the Asterisk in the Time column?

I have 9 "accounts" and all are set to use the default polling interval of 15 minutes but only the first 2 show time remaining. The others show an asterisk. I tried changing to "per account" polling and some of the asterisks disappeared, but only the first 2 accounts are polled when I Check Mail. (Stops checking at the first asterisked account?).

I think this occurred with the 5.0.0.0 update.

It means that the account is currently IDLEing. Basically it means that you may receive new email at any time and so the polling interval isn't particularly relevant.

Also, somewhat relevant to something you mentioned -- in v4, PP would have straight out ignored a "check mail" for idling accounts (because it's not necessary), but v5 does actually do something to check for messages. However, it's very quick and it may not even register in the status bar.

This would presumably apply to IMAP accounts using IDLE/Push. I noticed some accounts of this type will have a time (digit) value while others have an asterisk ("*") - so some accounts using this protocol w/ IDLE/Push are not IDLEing in the event a digit displays as opposed to an asterisk (when ILDEing)?

(I thought it might have to do with IDLE/Push enabled - but with some of these type accounts w/ and w/out asterisks, I wasn't sure :?)

Btw, welcome to the forum chrisb :)

Just because the account is IMAP and IDLE is enabled in the account doesn't necessarily mean that the server supports it. e.g. Yahoo does not support IDLE (never has, iirc), and I believe AOL used to support it but stopped supporting it after the merger; but almost every other major IMAP provider does support it. It's also possible that there was a random disconnect.

^ Thanks for the clarification Jeff :) (didn't consider the random disconnect possibility -- and for that matter, some I was looking at were probably Yahoo Accts as well #-o)
