Links not working

Post by Dixon Butz »

Getting a lot of email from Slickdeals.net that the links don't work. Not all the letters are blue and it errors.
Any idea of a fix?

Are you viewing the message in plain, rich or html? Check under the 'view' menu. If available, try one of the other methods (plain or html) and let me know the result of that, too.

My default is HTML.

Ok here's the situation...

There appears to be a limit of 512 characters that can be detected in the URL. This is probably a limitation of the development environment that PPv5 uses; I tested it in the (likely) PPv6 environment and the full URL is detected (I successfully tested a URL over 1024 characters). I scanned one of the URLs in your screenshot and it was just a little over 512 (530-something).

So -- I can't do anything about it in v5, but it should be fixed in v6.

If I forward an email from Slickdeals from Yahoo Mail to GMail, the link works. Yahoo is on the right.
Guess I have to use Gmail for this.

Those links are not the same. You can tell by comparing the first characters from the 3rd line from the bottom (2B3d vs YvS7).

There's also a very slight difference in the total length of each (532 vs 538).

I'm not sure about the significance of that since they're both over the 512-limit I had mentioned previously. :-s

Ok. I thought they were the same lenght. I'll change to Gmail on slickdeals and see if that works.

Gmail is too long also.

I had to email their support to change email address. So I asked if they could format those reply notification url's into a button or something. They said:
Thanks for the feedback about the limit on your email client and the button suggestion. Unfortunately, those emails are not available in another style at this time.

Oh well. No biggie.
Peace

Did a few more tests just fun. Just curious about this.

Set up a forward filter from GM to YMail.
Link to big for PP. And it is rich text.

Forwarding from gmail.com sends a working link in PP. That email sent is HTML. It was the same number of characters. 604

The mails form Slickdeals are rich text. I can't select view, HTML in PP. No way around that correct?

If POP Peeper allows you to select "Rich text" as an option, then you can also select "HTML" (and just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, I'm referring to the options under the "View" menu when viewing a message). Not all messages have HTML, in which case only "Plain text" is available. Rich text gets its information based on the HTML data, which is why you'll always see them together.

Plain and Rich text use the same "renderer", so I would expect both of them to be subject to the same character limitation. HTML uses a different renderer.

There's no way to force PP to show plain text using the HTML renderer, with one exception, but don't hold your breath -- under the "View" menu, is Encoding. If that allows you to select something (ie. it's not "none"), then it may show using the HTML renderer. But the problem is that this may still not allow you to click the link (because html requires markup for links to be clickable).

As I mentioned previously, this should be fixed in PPv6. In the meantime, you have a couple options that haven't previously been mentioned:
1) Select the full url and "copy" it
2) If you have TB or another supported client, use File / Open message in client
