Suspend eMail checking when Pop Peeper main window is opened

Dear Jeff,

I think, Pop Peeper is a nice little tool. But even the best tool can be made better. ;-)

What about the following suggestion:

Suspend eMail checking when Pop Peeper main window is opened

This can be very usefull when there are quite a lot emails to be checked and the next checking occurs during sorting out unwanted messages.

I always doublecheck the messages after marking some for deletion and have lost an important email that I marked by mistake for deletion only because an automatic check occured.

It should be easy to implement but very useful.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
rgruetzner

Welcome to the PP Forums, rgruetzner,

Thank you for your suggestion. Our software developer, Jeff, and other members of the PP Team will certainly review your comments & post their respective responses.

If I'm understanding correctly, you are suggesting that when clicking on the PP icon to open the main interface, the program automatically disables the mail-check function. If you are referring to something else, please let us know.

Just for informational purposes, you can disable PopPeeper's automatic mail-checking for all your accounts when you open the main interface, by simply clicking on the square-shaped icon with a green circle in it shown on the lower right corner of the interface.

Alternatively, the auto-check function can also be disabled (without opening the PP main interface) by right-clicking on the PP icon in the Taskbar Notification area and clicking on "Autocheck."

(Just remember to re-enable the Autocheck function for PP to continue checking your email accounts).

Regards,

I know that I can manually disable auto checking.

Most users will have it enabled by default and I think it would be an enhancement if auto check will be disabled as long as the PP main window is open.

After closing the main window PP should resume auto checking again.

Thanks for the suggestion -- it's a unique one :)

I know that for me, personally, I would absolutely dislike such a feature. I don't know how many times I have been replying to a message (with PP open in the background, so AutoCheck would be disabled in your scenario) and I get a follow-up email to the message I'm replying to and can then go and read that message and update my reply as necessary. Not to mention people who leave PP open either intentionally (e.g. multiple monitors) or otherwise.

I've never had this problem myself. Of the messages I delete, I'd say at least half are from the message list (the other half, while viewing the message); but I'm a keyboard freak, so pressing the "delete" key is not susceptible to the same issues as clicking if the message list suddenly changes.

To further complicate things, what if an email check is already in progress? Or, more likely, those of us who use IMAP/idle and our accounts are always connected -- PP would either have to disconnect the accounts or delay the notifications until you've minimize PP. So then you minimize PP and immediately new email pops up -- ARGH! Not so easy to implement, eh?

 Besides manually disabling AutoCheck like Pete mentioned, another idea: change the sort order so that newer messages are on the bottom; thus, when a new message arrives, it won't affect the placement of the old messages.

Jeff, maybe I did not put it easy enough.

I would like to have an option in PP that can be set to "disabe email checking when main window is open". This feature should be disabled by default. People that don't like this feature have to do nothing.

But, if one likes it he just has to enable this option in the configuration.

It it just for safety reasons: as I wrote already I had marked several eMail for deletion, the next check took place while I was still organizing the emails in PP. And of course all marked email were delete. Unfortunately I had marked an important email I needed by mistake.

I had to ask the sender to send it again.

With the suggested option this can not happen anymore.

Best regards,

I've put your suggestion into my notes for future consideration, but to be honest, even though it seemed like a good idea when I first read it, the more I've thought about it, the more trepidation I have about it.

btw, there is one more thing that you can do to mitigate this problem --
Under the main menu: Tools / Options / Storage,
enable "Save deleted messages"
Although not required, if you have the Sent Mail Viewer (part of the Plus Pack), it would make finding deleted messages easier.

One other thing -- if your accounts use IMAP, then your deleted messages are moved to the "Trash" folder on the server; similarly for Webmail. It's really only the POP3 protocol that doesn't have an online repository for deleted messages.

Jeff, please give it a try. I asked some of my friends and all would find it usefull.

As I wrote you should make it an option that is switched off by default so it is compatible for all users who don't want it.

So there is nothing to loose only to win more friends of Pop Peeper. :D
