After clicking Legit in Message Window it doesn't immediately show the images

Post by killme »

I have some messages that when opened will be viewed in Rich Text. This is what is suppose to happen. When I click "Legit" the message refreshes and now shows in HTML. This is what I want. But the images are not being displayed after I click Legit. I have to close the Message Window and open the message again so I can see the images.

Now that I have reopened the message and I can see the images if I click Legit (so the message is no longer marked as Legit) then it will now display in Rich Text. If I click Legit again then the message switches to HTML and the images will show this time. Kind of odd.

Is it suppose to show the images immediately after marking a message as Legit?

My workaround is after opening the message I double-click at the top to show message in HTML and then double-click again to unblock images. Then I can mark the message as Legit. This way I don't have to close and reopen the message to see the images.

Using PP Pro 4.1.1

If images do not get displayed after you click "Legit" then the easiest way to get the images to display would be to simply re-load the message without needing to either close and re-open the message again or performing the multi-step "workaround" that you have have been doing in order to see the images.

To be specific, in the event that images do not get displayed after clicking "Legit", just remain in the read message window where you currently are already and click on "File" > "Re-download message" then images will be displayed.

Under Tools / Options / View Messages, there is an option, "Smart View" with the choices:
- show all images (default)
- Use html settings below

If you've changed it to the 2nd option, then you could get part of the behavior you've described. Before you change that, though, could you tell us what settings you have on that window? Take a screenshot if it's easier (instructions).

Also, for the sake of consistency, do you know if the images in the message(s) are file attachments in the message or stored remote on a server? My testing involved remote images, and it could make a difference if yours are local.

However, I've tested this scenario, and even if I mark the message as legit and the setting above will block the images, I still see the option to "double-click to unblock" immediately -- no need to close the message window. So that's one thing I can't explain without further information.

The other strange thing is that it sounds like "legit" isn't sticking for you. If you re-open the message a 3rd time, is it still marked as legit? Also, on the main message list, are you displaying the "junk evaluation" column (it's the one with a flag icon in the header)? After you've marked the message as legit the *first* time, and closed the message window, do you see the green "thumbs up" icon in that column, which indicates it's marked as legit? If not, is it there after the 2nd time you've marked it as legit?

I've attached a screenshot of my settings. The images are stored on a remote server. If I reopen the message a third time it is still marked Legit. I do see a green thumb after I've marked the message as Legit the first time.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware of that method.

I've attached a few screenshots showing what I see when I [1] open a message, [2] mark it Legit, and then [3] reopen the message.

Thanks for the screenshots, that definitely helps.

Ok, I'm not sure what exactly happened, but all of a sudden, I'm able to duplicate the problem. I'm a little confused because I thought it was working as expected, then I went into test in Win10 and Win8 VMs, and it started working more like you describe; went back to my native win7 and it also started working like you describe. So there's definitely something I can look into now.

However, there's a couple other things:

1) In your first screenshot of the View-message window, there's no yellow "double-click here to open HTML" banner (it should be below the "Eval: unknown" banner). I've been racking my brain to remember if I had somehow made this optional; I've even taken a quick look at the code and as far as I can remember/tell, there's no option to disable it. Do you ever see this banner, do you know what I'm talking about (I can show a screenshot if necessary). I watched for it in all my various OS tests, and it always appeared in the equivalent of that screenshot.

2) My tests followed the procedure that you mentioned, that is, press "legit" and it loads HTML but no images; close and re-open the message and it works as expected. You had previously mentioned that "legit" wasn't sticking after you opened the message the 2nd time. Do you think that that is still a problem or perhaps you inadvertently pressed it again thinking that it would re-load the HTML page? It is a toggle, so if it's marked as legit and you press it again, it will "unmark" it as legit.

Off-topic: neither I nor apparently my profile picture investigative team use pinterest, but I hear it's quite popular... I've added their facebook information into POP Peeper's default catalog so their icon will appear on the view-message page (in the next release).

Update: ok, the main problem -- that the message wouldn't show images immediately after marking as "legit" -- has been found and fixed. Thank you for reporting this!

I'm still concerned about my #1 question in the previous post, so let me know if you can provide any insight about that.

#1. The yellow banner was there, but after I clicked "Legit" the yellow banner went away. When I clicked "Legit" again (deselected it) the yellow bar didn't come back. Apparently, that is when I took the screenshot. I guess it would make sense for the yellow banner to come back though after unmarking a message as "Legit". Redownloading the message or reopening the Message window makes the yellow bar reappear.

#2. #-o I didn't say it clearly before, but "Legit" sticks (that sounds like a toy, Legit Sticks) after clicking it the first time and opening the message a second time. No problems there.

Thanks for the speedy responses and for finding a fix. =D>

Ok, thanks for the follow-up. I wondered if there was something more to it, as I had seen the same problem (yellow banner not there when you might expect it) when doing different things; I just wanted to make sure that it was there in the beginning. Actually, the reason the banner doesn't display in that case is because the current state suggests that the images *should* be displayed, so there's just a flaw in what PP thinks is happening and what is actually happening.

There are enough bug fixes for a v4.1.2 release soon, if and when I can find the time.
