New update...now messages don't open, get "retrieving message" note

Hello,
I recently updated to the latest version of PPPro and now when I open a message I get a "Retrieving Message" banner and then nothing. What setting has changed? I was able to just double click a message and I'd get the full message...now I sometimes also get the HTML info for the message, but not the message itself. I am using a POP3 client.

I don't think this behavior has changed (at least not recently, if ever).

The first double-click will show HTML, if available; the next would retrieve the entire. Or you can click the links on the right.

If what PP has retrieved of the message doesn't have HTML, then the first double-click would "get entire".

Hello,

I am reopening this subject because I have a bit of an update...

The original problem is that when I try and view a message in PopPeeper I get a screen with the message "Please wait. The message is being retrieved." The message then can take as long as a minute to appear.
I am using Windows 11 and my provider for email is AOL. AOL recently said that some 3rd party email clients would need some adjustments to work properly so I set up Oauth2 as specified. I get my messages, but the viewing process is a pain. I would note I have PopPeeper on other machines running Windows 11 and don't have the issue.
Any suggestions?

Is the problem that PP has to retrieve the messages at all or that it takes a while? That is, I'm asking if your other computers still have to retrieve the messages when you view them or, if they do, if it's much faster than what you're experiencing?

There are some default options you can look at changing, specifically:
main menu: Tools / Options / Message Retrieval
I've included a screenshot the default settings below for reference.

One option in particular may be causing PP to have to retrieve the message when you view it:
Webmail/Imap: don't retrieve body for messages marked as read on server

What this option means is that if PP sees a message that it doesn't already have, and it's already been read (as marked on the server), then PP will only retrieve the header. So when you open this message in PP, PP will have to retrieve the entire message so that you can read it. If you think this is the case (ie. the problem occurs for messages that are already marked as read), then disabling this option will help.


Retrieving the entire message is generally fast (couple seconds), but there are some reasons why it may be slow, including:
- not already connected to the server (e.g. imap is disabled)
- large message (attachments)
- the account in PP is busy doing other things
- slow internet
