WebMail Subscription

What is the WebMail subscription?

The WebMail subscription allows you to access certain types of email services using a protocol other than a standard protocol (e.g. POP3, IMAP, RSS, etc.). The WebMail protocol can be used to access email accounts that don’t provide IMAP/POP3 support or in locations where the standard protocols may be blocked.

POP Peeper’s WebMail protocol provides basic email notification for the following services (please note that some of these services are also supported via IMAP/POP3, without the WebMail subscription):

Outlook / LiveMail / Hotmail
Yahoo
Excite (Excite email service ended August 31, 2021)
RediffMail
Juno
NetZero

Support for Gmail service by the WebMail protocol was discontinued prior to the launch of the WebMail subscription service. POP Peeper v5 will automatically convert existing Gmail-webmail accounts to Gmail-IMAP accounts.

Do I need the WebMail subscription for POP Peeper?

In most cases, no, you do not need the WebMail subscription.

Many email services that POP Peeper supports via the WebMail protocol already provide IMAP (or POP3) service for free. IMAP is the recommended service as it is more efficient, more reliable and provides more features than WebMail. See the list below for information about each WebMail service and how to change your accounts in POP Peeper to use IMAP/POP3.

There are only a few email services supported by POP Peeper’s WebMail protocol that don’t provide IMAP or POP3; so for these services, you may find that the WebMail subscription is suitable.

Another scenario where you may need the WebMail subscription is when you are not able to access IMAP/POP3 from your location (e.g. behind a corporate firewall), but can access the respective email service using your webbrowser.

Can I expect 100% uptime to the WebMail services?

No. WebMail support relies on a presumed interface. Some webmail providers change their interface frequently (often, these are back-end changes that may not affect the User Interface that you see) and others haven’t made changes in years. When a webmail provider makes a change that affects POP Peeper’s WebMail service, Esumsoft will do its best to release a fix as soon as possible. Ever since POP Peeper supported WebMail in 2002, the goal has always been to release a fix the same day; however, this is not always possible because some webmail providers are much more complicated than others and it will take more time to investigate these services. Also, often the changes are rolled out to a limited number of accounts at a time and issues can only be fixed if Esumsoft has an account with the problem (aka: global outage). Further, there is no guarantee that a webmail service can be maintained due to increasing security techniques by the webmail providers.
